@talkhouse was kind enough to have me write about one of my fave directors, Elaine May, and her most reviled film ISHTAR. Tragic that it was May's last film, but perhaps more tragic is the work we’ll never get to see of hers. This is definitely one of my more personal pieces as I wander down memory lane into the catacombs of my youth. Suspect Video, Cumberland Cinema, how I miss thee. The face of Toronto is beginning to bear the same contours of cinema; corporatized, boring, insular with a wide dearth of revolt. Since lockdowns, it’s hard not to reminisce about the past. But harder still to not imagine a future where it and the people will return. ❤️🅰️🖤
