“The Heights Ascending” 48x36 oil. This piece is available at Settlers West Gallery as part of their Summer Show coming up in May. My first trip to Canyon De Chelly came in April of 2024 and as I write this I am once again back at the canyon, April 2026. The last two years have been transformative for me in many ways, and coming back to this place I feel like the canyon and the paintings I have done of it have been with me the whole way. The light shining through me, or trying to, as it shines through the canyon. There are a couple more pieces forthcoming, this one, and then a piece that will be available in the Coeur D’Alene Auction in July. And then I may take a break. I have plenty of new material from this recent trip. I took a 4-hour Jeep tour deep into the canyon and my guide, Lona, was incredible and shared many funny and heartfelt stories of her life in and around the canyon. In fact the title for the next piece in July will come straight from her. But I may let the new material percolate just a bit. Anyway, I will momentarily get into my car and leave this place. Some people and some places act as shepards, and I don’t know if I will ever return.
This piece is still available at the Briscoe Museum. In a previous post I mentioned that the light source is not literal: it’s not a campfire or a jeep or a ufo…though folks do seem to enjoy the ufo possibility. 🤣 In my mind when I painted it the light was me and this is what I thought it might look like if my inner light were powerful enough to light up the canyon. A little indulgent perhaps but I love this piece for it and may give the idea another go. I hope you enjoy.
“To Glow From Within” 24x30 oil. This piece is available tonight at the Briscoe Museum by purchase draw. Remote vids are welcome. Check out their website for all the details.
To Glow From Within. 24x30 oil. This is the second piece at the Briscoe Museum this weekend, available for purchase on Saturday by purchase draw. Remote bids are welcome. Check out the Briscoe Museum website for details. I have been into areas of strong reflected light lately, for the technical challenge of painting what is essentially two different kinds of light in one overall lighting scheme, and because I like the implicit metaphor of it. Everything we see is reflected light, and I find it so profound that we can’t actually look directly at the sun, unaided. We can’t look at the source of all life and everything there is for us. Instead we bask in its glow and see in its afterglow. I dunno, I like that. I hope you enjoy.
Against The Dark. 30x40 oil on canvas. This piece is exhibiting, and available for purchase, at the Briscoe Museum this coming weekend as part of their Annual Night of Artists show. I’ll be there if you’re attending! This is the first painting I have done with an entirely non-literal light source. It’s not a campfire, or a tricked out four wheel drive with a bunch of lights, or a ufo. It’s me. I am the light in the canyon. Against the dark. I don’t mean anything grandiose by that either. It’s just an idea I had to paint. I may revisit it again. I think we are all the light against the dark. I hope you enjoy.
I have just a few spots left in my sept 9-11 workshop in Putney Vermont. As part of the registration fee, a tour of Richard Schmid’s home and studio is included! We did this for the first time last year and it left everyone in awe-inspired shock! 🤣 If you are a fan of his work this is not to be missed. My hunch is these remaining spots go really quick so don’t wait. I hope to see you there.
I’m hosting a live one-hourish webinar tomorrow, put on by The Oil Painters Of America, as part of their Lunch And Learn series. It’s open to everyone, tickets are $15 for non-members I believe. Come check it out! The topic will be color Temperature and how it plays a central role for me in the creation of my paintings, as well as whatever things that come up from viewer questions. Go to the OPA website for registration details at: /lunch-and-learn/
