Stafford, 1990. Chemical warfare suits, yellow dust masks and a general election candidacy - Mayhem. Altern 8 (@altern8official ) is my mate Mark Archer (@mark_archer ) and then partner Chris Peat, formed as a side project to their earlier duo Nexus 21.
They signed to Network Records in Birmingham and built their name on a sound influenced by Detroit techno, Chicago house, and the emerging UK rave scene; Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, and Phuture all encoded in the DNA. Their live shows became notorious for the MK3 chemical warfare suits and fluorescent yellow dust masks worn on stage, first used when returning to play the same club they’d already done as Nexus 21 - nobody could know they were one and the same.
Move My Body's vocal sample is lifted directly from 2 Houss People featuring Cynthia M's Move My Body (1987). In 1992, Chris Peat stood for the Stafford constituency in the General Election representing the Hardcore (Altern8-ive) party. He received 158 votes and finished fourth - not last!
The music landed harder than the campaign.
