HB381 is delighted to announce “Into the Green,” a solo exhibition by one of Scandinavia’s leading ceramic artists, Marit Tingleff (b. 1954, Norway). A painter among ceramicists, Tingleff is known for her gestural application of slips and oxides on monolithic coil-built clay slabs. By marking her surfaces with turbid, scrawled lines and streaking rivulets of slip, she produces roiling, epistolary abstractions on vast ceramic surfaces.

Marit Tingleff’s exhibition “Into the Green” will open on May 8 at HB381 - an unusual opportunity to see this prodigious Norwegian ceramic artist’s work in New York City. From my essay accompanying the show: “All normal sense of scale is suspended. Each composition could represent a few rivulets in a streambed, a glimpse upward through a tree canopy, or the aerial view of a mountain range. And so too, our sense of time. The pieces are springlike, certainly, bursting with new life, but in actuality their constituent materials and fired forms are eternal, existing on the vast temporal scale of geology rather than botany. All one can say, really, is that Tingleff’s work is in one-to-one relation to itself. It is a map of the complex methods of its own making, a drama already unfolded that we nonetheless can still witness.”

The last few days Stian and Markus have helped me pack the works for the exhibition @hostlerburrows opening May 1st. The driver arrived in a car that barely had room for all the boxes, a day behind schedule due to problems with the gearbox. Hope the drive to Copenhagen goes well, and that the container across the Atlantic is spared from storms or pirates. This amazing exhibition is a must, if you are in Berlin sometime before May next year. These little birds made of pottery shards from Petrit’s hometown Runik in Kosovo, are some of my favourites. This exhibition is so rich of narratives and great humanistic insight, not possible to understand from some pictures. I was tipped off about these works from 1984, posted @nyborgsauksjoner Title: «Black meets» «Svart møtes» So nice to see such old works, I feel these 41 years passed so fast. They are from the very early period, when I started exploring the decorative method that I still work with. I am allowing myselves to love them 🥰 #1984
Hvorfor får et motiv en annen verdi på et lerret sammenlignet med en vase? Dekor har til tider hatt lav status i kunsten, men er en viktig del av kunsthåndverkets historie og har fått fornyet aktualitet de siste årene.
Ofte forbindes dekor med pynt, men for Marit Tingleff (@marittingleff ) er dekor ornamenter. Det var først da Marit ble frustrert og vasket av dekoren at språket i kunsten hennes tok form.
Dekor er et av temaene som utforskes i «KUNST·HÅND·VERK», en sanselig og mangfoldig utstilling som tar for seg samtidens kunsthåndverk. Utstillingen vises i Nasjonalmuseet frem til 1. februar.

Last week in Copenhagen we visited the exhibition Recast in the old university library. Our daughter-in-law, Lea Gulditte Hestelund, @leaguldditte is showing a beautiful work; Self-portrait as a table. The exhibition celebrates and discusses the 150th anniversary of women’s admission to university. There are still very few women with academic careers who are portrayed, which is clearly shown in the university’s art collection, it contains over a hundred busts of white men. 13 contemporary artists have been invited to shed light on this issue.
