My visit to Ethiopia was full of surprises. The Mursi live simply, in small huts, with very limited means, yet there is an extraordinary sense of individuality in the way they present themselves. It was also amazing to see the strong desire among many to distinguish themselves further when standing for the camera.
What struck me was how individuality could emerge even when so much was shared; the same materials, the same environment, the same realities.
Across the different communities I visited, each had its own distinct visual identity, even when living close to one another. Dress became a reflection of belonging, character, and self-expression all at once.
I wanted to celebrate the Mursi not only for the beauty of their traditions, but for the way each person brought something of themselves into it. Every detail felt considered. Personal. Alive.

Mi visita a Etiopía estuvo llena de sorpresas. Los Mursi viven de manera sencilla, en pequeñas chozas y con recursos muy limitados, pero aun así existe un sentido extraordinario de individualidad en la forma en que se presentan. También fue increíble ver el fuerte deseo de muchos por diferenciarse aún más al momento de posar frente a la cámara.
Lo que más me impactó fue cómo podía surgir la individualidad incluso cuando tanto era compartido: los mismos materiales, el mismo entorno, las mismas realidades.
En las distintas comunidades que visité, cada una tenía una identidad visual propia y muy marcada, incluso viviendo cerca unas de otras. La vestimenta se convertía, al mismo tiempo, en un reflejo de pertenencia, carácter y expresión personal.
Quise celebrar a los Mursi no solo por la belleza de sus tradiciones, sino también por la manera en que cada persona aportaba algo de sí misma a ellas. Cada detalle se sentía pensado. Personal. Vivo.

A location can say a great deal. It might be indoors or outdoors: a beach, a boat, a helicopter, a home, or even an everyday setting. Each environment brings its own mood and meaning.
The key is to ensure that your model remains the focus. In visually rich or highly decorated locations, that can be challenging. While a striking setting can enhance a photograph, it can just as easily overpower it.
Location is a powerful storytelling tool. It helps convey your message and shapes how the viewer perceives the person you’re photographing. But it needs to support the subject, not compete with them.

En busca de lugares hermosos alrededor del mundo. Archivo Testino. Una locación puede decir muchísimo. Puede ser en interiores o exteriores: una playa, un bote, un helicóptero, una casa o incluso un entorno cotidiano. Cada ambiente aporta su propio estado de ánimo y significado.
La clave es asegurarte de que tu modelo siga siendo el foco. En locaciones visualmente recargadas o muy decoradas, eso puede ser un desafío. Aunque un escenario impactante puede realzar una fotografía, también puede fácilmente opacarla.
La locación es una herramienta poderosa de narrativa. Ayuda a transmitir tu mensaje y moldea cómo el espectador percibe a la persona que estás fotografiando. Pero debe complementar al sujeto, no competir con él.

Yesterday I saw Karol G bring a group of all-women Mariachi performers on stage at Coachella, and it took me back to when I photographed a Mariachi group in Mexico. There was only one woman in the entire ensemble.
It was powerful to see Karol G celebrating Mexican Mariachi culture in her performance. Latin America united.

Ayer vi a Karol G subir al escenario en Coachella a un grupo de mariachis compuesto solo por mujeres, y me hizo recordar cuando fotografié a un grupo de Mariachis en México. En ese entonces, solo había una mujer en todo el conjunto.
Fue muy poderoso ver a Karol G celebrar la cultura del Mariachi Mexicano en su presentación. Latinoamérica unida.

People often ask me about my presence in this image. I don’t usually include myself in my work, but this particular shoot was about my personal relationship with Kate. Joe McKenna, the stylist, mentioned that he liked the snapshots I had taken of Kate in real life and suggested we approach the story in that way. Not as a model, but more as a friend.
I decided to use a small camera that I would carry with me at night when we went out together, so I could capture her naturally. Going out with Kate is always full of surprises. Her curiosity opens up endless possibilities, and if you’re there, you benefit from it. In my case, I always feel compelled to document those moments.
It wasn’t really intended for me to appear in this picture, but with all the mirrors behind her, it couldn’t be avoided. And so, there I was, standing just outside the small guest bathroom in my house.
In the end, I think it’s good to see who is creating the reaction she’s giving. The more a photograph captures a genuine reaction, the more it truly becomes yours.

La gente a menudo me pregunta sobre mi presencia en esta imagen. No suelo incluirme en mi trabajo, pero esta sesión en particular trataba sobre mi relación personal con Kate. Joe McKenna, el estilista, comentó que le gustaban las fotos espontáneas que le había tomado a Kate en la vida real y sugirió que abordáramos la historia de esa manera: no como modelo, sino más como amiga.

Su curiosidad abre un sinfín de posibilidades y, si estás ahí, te beneficias de ello. En mi caso, siempre siento la necesidad de documentar esos momentos.
En realidad no estaba pensado que yo apareciera en esta imagen, pero con todos los espejos detrás de ella, no se pudo evitar. Y así, ahí estaba yo, de pie justo afuera del pequeño baño de visitas en mi casa.
Al final, creo que es bueno ver quién está provocando la reacción que ella muestra. Cuanto más una fotografía capture una reacción genuina, más realmente pasa a ser tuya.
