MOTHER-BURN is the title of the exhibition at @wildpalms in Düsseldorf and the second video in a trilogy by the artist duo Asef-Burckhardt. Developed in the burned remains of a redwood grove within the legendary ecological settlement project The Sea Ranch on California’s northern coast, the work brings together video, drawing, painting, and performance. In MOTHER-BURN, Asef-Burckhardt explore what remains of the architectural utopias of the 1960s when they encounter the climate crisis, recurring wildfires, and the contemporary logic of speculative coastal real estate. In their Artist Talk, Mario Asef and Kirstin Burckhardt spoke with Isabelle Malz (Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf) about their exhibition and practice. Isabelle Malz studied art history, philosophy, and French literature in Basel and Bochum. In 2007 she completed her PhD with the dissertation on the image processes in the video works of Gary Hill. Among many exhibitions she has curated „I’M NOT A NICE GIRL! Eleanor Antin, Lee Lozano, Adrian Piper, Mierle Laderman Ukeles“ (2020), „Katharina Sieverding“ (2024/25), and most recently „Queer Modernism: 1900–1950“ (2025/26). Mario Asef es un artista residente en Berlín. Estudió arquitectura en Argentina y arte en Alemania y en Londres. Es de Córdoba, y a veces se le oye ese acento tan característico que los delata. Opina que es una ciudad, artísticamente hablando, conservadora, y que en los años ochenta y noventa, la época en que vivía allí, se sentía un poco aislado del mundo. Considera que tuvo suerte en poder salir y en haber conocido tantas culturas diferentes. MOTHER-BURN: Mario expone actualmente en wildpalms, Düsseldorf, en exposición conjunta con Kristin Burckhardt, hasta el 21 de febrero, y participa en una charla con Isabelle Malz sobre la creación artística en pareja y las dinámicas de relación no hegemónicas.
