“Vigil” Paper mache In the 70’s, the Guam Pacific Daily News refused to print announcements in the Chamorro language. This was one of many policies created to force the Chamorro people to speak English instead. I considered the service the daily paper provided for the community at a time when social media didn’t exist. It would’ve been the most effective channel for sharing information on a large scale, like obituaries. But the refusal to do so in the community’s native tongue essentially silenced them. This piece is a space for those words, the culture, and news that the paper refused to provide. You can see it up close at the @guammuseum until June! Please check out the exhibit!

Close, Open 2026 This piece is intentionally open. I think of it as a beginning—my niece, Lola, starting her journey while our generation is still figuring out ours. The work leaves space to respond to what comes. Like the other pieces, it’s based on the idea that water knowledge is carried forward. Care and protection don’t end with us—they stay open for the next generation. Reading the Current 2026 This piece builds on the idea that observation turns into response. Stick charts weren’t about fixed routes, but understanding how water may move and knowing how to adjust. While shaping this piece, I had to respond to tension, bends, and resistance as they showed up. That process reminded me that caring for water means paying attention to change, not forcing certainty. Learning to Observe 2026 This piece draws from my research of Marshallese stick charts, seeing them as records of navigational knowledge rather than fixed maps. I thought about observation before control. Stick charts were made by generations of navigators watching & remembering how the currents moved. At first, I struggled with the material until I got out of the way let it move the way it wanted to. That kind of listening feels essential to how we care for and protect water. “Kudzu by Midnight” Kudzu is interesting because it appears harmonious and natural while taking over the nature beneath it. It’s easy to ignore or miss its transformative power to our landscape. I based this piece on the cliff line that crumbled today. I pass it every day for work and the surface fascinates me. I started my artistic journey in fashion so it makes sense my work now is most informed by basic shapes and textures.

“I’m Not Going Anymore” 48” x 60” Before many events, there’s a meltdown in my closet. A reject pile of outfits, textures, colors—nothing feels like enough. This is me sitting on that pile of panic. I’m proud of my accomplishments, but I still feel the need to show up in a way that leaves a mark. My grandmother rarely spoke about herself growing up, but the way she carried herself—and the values she instilled in us—made it clear we were expected to do well. Part of me still wants to prove that her move to the US, her sacrifices, and everything she shaped in us was worth it. Check it out in person at SARI SARI opening tonight at @inspo.stu !! Thank you @marcake.me for inviting me and I’m proud to be included in such a fun group of artists!
