It's Shark #FactFriday š¦
Did you know that Bronze Whaler sharks also are known as Narrowtooth sharks?
The reason for this is that they have very small hook-shaped teeth!
Meaning their diet is a variety of cephalopods, smaller schooling fish such as sardines, mullet but also smaller shark species and rays.

šHappy World Oceans dayš
Each year, World Ocean Day provides a unique opportunity for a wide variety of diverse organizations, schools, businesses, and communities to honour and celebrate the ocean that connects us all. By uniting together, and with a special emphasis on engaging and connecting youth, we can significantly increase awareness and action, and generate the will needed to create a healthier ocean, stabilize our climate and ensure a better future for all. Whether you live on the coast or far inland, we all need a healthy ocean to survive and thrive.
The Dyer Island Conservation Trust together with Marine Dynamics and Marine Dynamics Academy does this 365 days a year, and celebrates each and every milestone weāve made, in protecting the oceans and those who call the oceans āhomeā.
African penguin conservation which includes a nest project providing critical protection during the penguin fledgling stage; and in 2015 we opened a rehabilitation facility, the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary with an effective release rate off 80% .
Because of the research work done and working closely with government, the Trust managed to declare the area between Kleinbaai and Pearly Beach a āNO SHARK CATCH ZONEā. āThis is a big win for our sharksā says Wilfred Chivell, the Founder of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust.
Chivell echoes the theme of this yearās World Oceans Day ā The tides Are Changing! āMore focus is being placed on non-consumptive ways to economically gain from the oceans, whilst also protecting the oceans for generations to come, and that is exactly what Marine Dynamics, and their Dyer Island Conservation Trust is doing. Our aim is to DISCOVER, PROTECT and EDUCATEā says Chivell.
The theme for World Ocean Day is Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing.
World Ocean Dayās goal is to raise awareness of the various ways the oceans sustain us, the various resources we obtain from them, the various challenges that the oceans face, and how NGOs and governments throughout the world can act to conserve the oceans.

Shark Eyes: Natureās Built-In Protection System
Not all sharks protect their eyes in the same way, and the difference between a Great White Shark and a Bronze Whaler Shark is fascinating.
The Great White Shark uses something called ocular rotation. When attacking prey, the shark rolls its eye backwards, exposing a tough layer of white cartilage that helps shield and protect the eye during impact.
Bronze Whaler Sharks use a completely different method. They have a nictitating membrane, often called a āthird eyelid,ā which slides across the eye to protect it while feeding or when moving close to objects underwater.
Two different shark species. Two different survival adaptations. One incredible ocean.
Join Marine Dynamics Shark Tours and discover the science behind these apex predators in the wild.

On World Endangered Species Day 2026, we reflect on the incredible wildlife that shares our oceans, and the urgent responsibility we have to protect it.
Here in Gansbaai, Marine Dynamics works alongside some of the worldās most vulnerable species. From the iconic African penguin, now critically endangered, the powerful yet threatened Great white shark, to Indian Ocean Humpback dolphins, and more each species plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of our marine ecosystem.
Our waters are also home to endangered seabirds and marine life that depend on healthy oceans for survival. Every sighting is a reminder of both their beauty and their fragility.
At Marine Dynamics, conservation is at the heart of everything we do, through research, education, and responsible tourism. By understanding these species and the challenges they face, we can take meaningful action to protect them.
This World Endangered Species Day, we stand for those at risk. Together, we can ensure that future generations will still experience the wonder of these animals in the wild. #EndangeredSpeciesDay #MarineDynamics #Gansbaai #ConservationMatters #ProtectWildlife
The Broadnose Sevengill Story
Some sharks seem to belong to another era entirely, and the broadnose sevengill shark is one of them.
With seven gill slits instead of the typical five, this ancient species has remained largely unchanged for more than 150 million years. Growing up to 3 metres in length, sevengills are apex predators, yet encounters with them often reveal a calm and measured presence beneath the surface.
Unlike many members of the Hexanchidae family, broadnose sevengill sharks are frequently found in relatively shallow coastal waters, including kelp forest ecosystems and even estuaries. Their slow, confident movements offer a very different perspective on shark behaviour compared to fast-moving pelagic species.
Another unique feature is their single dorsal fin positioned far back on the body, a rare characteristic among sharks and part of what gives them such a prehistoric appearance.
Every species plays a role in maintaining balance within the marine ecosystem, and the presence of sevengill sharks highlights the incredible biodiversity found along our coast.

Why Sharks Matter More Than Ever
Sharks are often misunderstood, yet they are among the most important regulators of ocean health.
As apex and mesopredators, sharks help maintain balance within marine ecosystems by influencing prey populations, supporting species diversity, and contributing to the stability of ocean food webs.
From the fast-moving bronze whaler to the distinctive hammerhead and the ancient sevengill shark, each species plays a critical ecological role in sustaining healthy marine environments.
When shark populations decline, entire ecosystems can shift, often resulting in reduced biodiversity and disrupted ecological balance.
At Marine Dynamics, every trip is an opportunity to transform fear into understanding through science, education, and conservation. Together with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, we support ongoing marine research, public awareness, and the protection of vulnerable shark species and their habitats.
Protecting sharks is not only about saving a species.
It is about protecting the future health of the ocean itself.

Every year, World Migratory Bird Day reminds us that the skies above us are part of a much bigger story, one that stretches across continents and oceans. Here in Gansbaai, weāre privileged to witness that story unfold along our very own coastline.
As the seasons change, countless seabirds arrive on our shores, having travelled thousands of kilometers across the globe. From dancing Storm Petrels, to powerful Albatrosses, these visitors depend on healthy oceans and safe habitats to rest, feed, and continue their incredible journeys.
At Marine Dynamics, we see first-hand how closely connected marine life truly is. The same rich waters that support sharks, whales, and dolphins also sustain the migratory birds that visit our coast each year. Protecting this delicate ecosystem means protecting every species that relies on it, in the air and beneath the waves.
This World Migratory Bird Day, we celebrate the resilience of these remarkable travellers and renew our commitment to conservation. Together, we can ensure that Gansbaai remains a safe haven for generations of birds to come. #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #MarineDynamics #Gansbaai #Conservation #ProtectOurOceans
