I love this reel trend I've seen around Instagram this week.
If you're new around here, Hi!
My name is Maridith and I'm a historical costumer in Northern California. I've created capsule wardrobes for several time periods and cultures from imperial Rome to the early 19th century.
I also dabble in whimsy now and then.
The space I create online is focused on craft, and supportive of the LGBTQIA+ community, people of color, neuro divergant, and women. If you're here to harass any of them you won't enjoy my space long term.
If you like the idea of this space please come along for the ride. I try to keep it fun around here.

Aloha from Honolulu. Each time I come out for work I try to learn more about the amazing people I work with here. This trip I've been learning more about textile history. Rather than making a video and missing important parts of that history I'm going to create a YouTube playlist you might find helpful if you're looking to learn about them too.
Aloha

A few years ago when I found bullet journaling I discovered it wasn't helping me stay organized with habit tracking, but it did help me make notes and sketch out historical patterns and adjust those shapes to my measurements or those of others I was creating for. To you have a pattern/ garment study journal?

I've posted about this before, but I love sharing this cool display of costumes and mask that @berkeleyrep displays in the Oakland Airport. Check it out the next time you're passing through. Hopefully I can make it too a live performance soon

Sometimes it's good to step into the present moment in fashion to engage in conversations effecting our lives today. There are so many conversations going on around the Met Gala, our current guilded age, Vogue, Anna Winter, and The Devil Wears Prada 2. Are you keeping up with the current conversations?

Happy Mother's Day to my amazing and supportive Mom. Thank you for being there to celebrate my wins, hold me hand when I fall down, and listening to my random thoughts processing.
I love you always โฃ๏ธ
I know I am truly blessed to have a mom who shared her love of craft with me. Creating something from raw materials is one of the great joys in my world. thank you Mom and Happy Mother's Day.

The weather is warming up in Northern California and I want to go enjoy it. How are you planning on getting out this summer.

Sometimes you need a little office decor that will make you giggle with joy and remind you that joyful chaos has its time and place.

I love little details like this. My pattern was directional so I couldn't lay out my dress with the manufacturer directions. Instead I pieced a tiny corner of my skirt hems. There was no finding more of the fabric so of course I used a historical piecing practice to preserve the pattern.

So in all fairness to my coworkers. There were signs the whole time and a few of them are already aware ๐

Funny story. Yes you can make the dress yourself. It will not be as cheap as fast fashion. The more you do it, the more you will learn about seam finishing and you will be less likely to be happy with wobbly seams. I'm tacking down all the seams from this dress I started last week so the jersey fabric stops draping around my finishing.
Overall I'm really pleased with this vintage Vogue pattern by Diane Von Ferstenberg.
Happy sewing!
