“Vuoi vuoi” is an expression we use when we feel overwhelmed, in both joy and sorrow. The melody was composed by Georg Buljo, and I adapted it to a poem by Rauni Magga Lukkari, one of our leading poets. It speaks of contrasts, in nature and in life. During my visit to Canada in 1988, some Indigenous friends gave me a poster featuring a poem that began with the words ‘Child, listen child.’ The poem was written by Dianne Meili, a Cree/Métis writer. Her words moved me deeply and inspired me to compose a melody for them. This became the song ‘Roahkkadit rohtte luođi mánážan – Child, Listen Child,’ which appears as a bonus track on the re-release of Goaskinviellja. See the full lyrics video on my YouTube channel. At my concerts in 2024 and 2025, I shared this powerful poem by Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer, always with the hope for an end to the bombing, starvation, abuse, genocide. It is now New Year’s Eve and I cry out to the heavens: How is it possible for this to go on and on? What kind of world do we live in that allows this? My heart, all our hearts,-  cry for those living in terrible conditions in Palestine, in Ukraine, in Congo, in Sudan, and too many other places. I cling to hope, even though it is difficult. I am profoundly grateful for all the good things I get to experience and be a part of. Thank you to my loved ones,  family, relatives,  friends, colleagues, supporters, and fans - a heartfelt thank you for being in my life. Let us continue to take care of one another in a world that is falling apart. Let us hold on to hope and love. May the new year bring peace. “Uldda Nieida,” with lyrics by Karen Anne Buljo, is inspired by the uldda – earth spirits in Sámi tradition. In Sámi stories, the uldda girl is said to enchant men with her beauty, unless they protect themselves with a silver coin or a drop of human blood. They are beautiful, mysterious beings – both guiding and dangerous. They can protect, but also lure and deceive. In this song, the voice becomes one of them. The song Idjagieđas is written in a language that doesn’t actually exist. You might have assumed that this song is in Sámi, but it isn’t. The words were simply improvised and came out beautifully during a studio session. I remember the first time I worked this way was during a recording in Paris with the French producer, Yvan Cassar. I composed Lottáš (Little Bird) in 2006 for a German film adaptation of Hansel and Gretel, directed by Anne Wild. Like many fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers, passed down through generations, these stories continue to live in different forms and languages. My mother tongue is rich in metaphor. Sometimes one single word can hold an entire story about our connection to each other and to the land. I often choose Sámi words as album titles that carry stories within them. Idjagieđas is an expression my dear aunt, Ravna, shared with me and comes from “idja” (‘night’) and “gieđas” (possessive form of ‘hand’), so in English, one might say, “in the hand of the night.” It expresses the feeling of someone leaving the warmth and safety of home to step into the unknown.
