Introducing our second year student studio portraits ✨ A sneak peak at some of the artwork and artists that will be at this year’s Tribeca Ball! @marcus_4urelius , NYAA MFA Class of 2026 in Drawing Marcus Venegas earned a BFA in Studio Art at The University of Texas at Austin, and is currently earning his MFA at the New York Academy of Art. His work has been featured in Curatory Magazine, a Times Square digital billboard, Artistcloseup Contemporary Art Magazine, Modern Renaissance Magazine, Visual Art Journal Magazine/interview, Volume 18 of Friend of the Artist art book, Apricity Magazine, where the work was exhibited in the Sinclair Suite at the Texas Union, Austin, among many other publications. His work has also appeared at the “39th annual Chelsea International Fine Arts Competition Exhibition” at Agora Gallery, NY, the Art and Identity Showcase in the WCP Ballroom, Austin, and the Artsin Square Virtual Exhibition. Venegas participated in the Tribeca Ball Hallway Exhibition, New York, the group exhibitions “Somos Recuerdos,” Austin, “By NYC,” New York, “The Last Minute Show,” Austin, “With All the Desperation of a Starving Dog,” Austin, “The Armageddon Show,” Austin, “Print Extravaganza,” Austin“I’ll Call you Back,” Austin, and “Reimaging Health: Aesthetics of Health,” an exhibition displayed in the Health Discovery building in Del Medical School as well as in the Visual Arts Center, Austin. Venegas has been awarded the President’s Scholar Award, the Summer Undergraduate Residency Program (SURP) Faculty Award, as well as the SURP Academy Scholar Award. He also has been awarded the Roy Crane Award, Austin, TX; a Gold Seal Medal for the VASE competition, San Marcos, TX; as well as a Gold Key for Arts and Writing Scholastic event in New York, NY. Marcus’ work will be on display and available for purchase at this year’s Tribeca Ball on Monday, April 20th. “As a gay Mexican-American storyteller, I explore the hardships of queer romance through the lens of ‘autobiographical memory’ and Daniel Kahneman’s concept of the ‘remembering self.’ My work focuses on how we reflect on past experiences—defined by their peak intensity rather than their duration—applying this to my personal history and the trauma associated with my identity. Through artistic activism, I use material symbols such as cannabis and cigarette ash, often performing the literal burning of my pieces to create an authentic emotional motif. The fading softness in my work alludes to memories reemerging or slipping away, highlighting the impermanence of youth. My black-and-white drawings serve as a medium for honesty, while lyrical compositions immerse the viewer in a universe of pictorial poetry and the theatrical nature of romance.
