Happy International Dance Day!
People often ask why I enjoy photographing dance so much. The truth is, I foundationally adore dance. I danced from ages 3-12, before transitioning to music (and much later photography) as my creative outlets. I was more successful with oboe and to some extent piano than I was with dance, and so I moved on.
But I’ve always appreciated just how difficult it is to make dance look as easy as professionals do. It’s tough, exhausting, exhilarating work. It floats at the intersection of athleticism and art.
Dance requires raw physical ability, as well as grace. The best dancers also exhibit the skills to embrace the most nuanced of gestures. It is a form of storytelling, and so an element of acting is also involved.
All of this, plus of course the work of those who support the dancers - from the choreographers to the lighting, costume, and set designers, and of course musicians or curators of music - all play integral, harmonious roles.
A few photographers have alluded over the years that they view my dance imagery as perhaps most emblematic of my work. And so, I suppose I am taking the hint and leaning in.
Thank you to the entirety of the dance community. And special thanks to @dance_japan_nyc for your recent gift of always elegant performances at @brooklynbotanic , with brilliant programming by @marcreation . Happy IDD! 🌺 💕
