Wax Audio – 9 Countries was recorded on location across nine countries—Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Tibet, India, Egypt, and Greece—primarily between October 2005 and March 2007, with some Egypt material from an earlier 2001 trip. The project stemmed from a two-year overland journey Compagnoni took with his wife, Ishbel, after quitting their jobs in late 2005. A deft and timely piece of sound art, Ear Explorer, an Italian sound collective that resurrects dead sounds, transports us to the Bikini lagoon and into an uncertain future. "Here is the Bikini lagoon, mirroring the sky that attacked it last year with the monstrous and stupendous mushroom of an atomic explosion. A group of American scientists has landed on the atoll. Special instruments are arranged to record the effects of deadly radioactivity. Can one still live in Bikini? Physical and metaphysical places, which an explorer must renounce to explore, as a supreme gesture of exploration. Sometimes stopping reveals more than advancing through. EAR EXPLORER is an italian sound collective that ressurects dead sounds using old 78s and vinyl records, two turntables, broken needles, two walkmen, some flat batteries to slow down energy, weights, pots and rubber bands to create a closed loop delay so that what initially comes first comes back later, like the past that resonates in the present. GARINO LUCA (Turin, 1978) is an Italian sound artist based in Turin, he perfected his research at the LaSDIM (Laboratory for experimentation and teaching of musical informatics). Active since 1996 in the field of acousmatic music, Garino developed a parallel burning passion for ethnomusicological research. Garino has focused his attention on the natural soundscape and the languages of the different living species that inhabit it, he different living species that inhabit it, whose traces he archives by means of field recording. His work invites the audience to give heed to sounds on the verge of audibility, to overcome (or recover) the rupture given by the human, or at least western, difficulty of developing communication with other species, as well as establishing a relationship with the environment that is devoid of supremacy or exploitation.
