We all know that civil discourse has gone haywire, that public conversation has drifted inexorably towards extreme right and extreme left. The @milesnadaljcc has decided to do something about it. Over the course of the next year I am going to be hosting a talk series there, The Nuance, approaching the central questions of our time with, you guessed it, nuance.
Our first guest will be Chrystia Freeland, discussing globalization. As a reporter in Eastern Europe during the 1990s, she saw its beginnings. As Deputy Prime Minister during the first Trump administration she faced, head on, what some would say is the beginning of its end. What went wrong? What's worth saving? What do we do now? I don't think there's anyone in the world better positioned to answer these questions.
The first talk will be May 24, at 7 pm. Register at the link in bio or below.
I talked to the CBC about Charles visiting Trump as a grand meeting of two great incoherences. Also why you don’t negotiate with people who lack object permanence. #canada #Trump #charles
If you were to ask me what the most underrated book in Canadian literature is, it would be Howard O’Hagan’s 1960 jewel Tay John, a novel about the founding of Jasper, Alberta and the life story of Yellowhead, or Tete Jaune, or Tay John. I just snagged the author’s copy. Of course it had to be published in New York. Also: Bring back the illustrated author image!

Thank you @spikey.licious for one of the great meals I have ever eaten and for welcoming us into your home. A deeply passionate act of gastronomy. I can’t quite believe it was prepared on an electric stove in your apartment kitchen.

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of doing an author visit to the Warkworth prison book club. Easily the most informed, thoughtful and considered discussion of The Next Civil War I have had with any book club. Insert joke about captive audience here.
