"What is Maps? What is Good Space??" ⁠ ⁠ We get asked this a lot, even by our friends and followers. So, we want to reintroduce what @maps.music and @maps.goodspace actually are. They're different, but related, and neither is a coffee shop (technically).

You’ve probably heard: Good Space 2.0 is open every Saturday from 11–4 for free tea + espresso, plus records, merch, and books for sale.⁠ ⁠ P.S. We’re still thinking about last month’s party. Thanks again for welcoming us into our new home, and special thanks to @omarijazz and @e.n.e.r.g.y.a.n.g.e.l ., Maps artists, and the night’s DJs. We are really excited to announce our new brand direction, and website are now live and linked in our bio. There you will find we have a full digital work archive up of every project we have ever worked on, a music player with songs from our roster, and updates to our shop with more goods, hats, slip mats and Emahoy tees. CRATE DIGGING: Stories from the Good Space vinyl shelf ꩜⁠ ⁠ We are lovers of vinyl. We love the rare, the vintage, and the eclectic, and we love having a collection worth sharing with friends.⁠ ⁠ Presenting "Crate Digging," an introduction to these extra-special selections from the Maps catalogue (available on the Good Space shelf).⁠ ⁠ Up first: The Space Lady’s Greatest Hits.⁠ ⁠ Susan Dietrich Schneider began publicly performing in the 70s on the streets of San Francisco and Boston. After a transient decade selling art, busking, and barely scraping by, her psychedelic, synth-pop sound was perfected in the 80s and 90s alongside her first husband, Joel Dunsany (aka The Cosmic Man).⁠ ⁠ She swapped her accordion for a Casiotone keyboard and was formally dubbed "The Space Lady" in 1984 by the Berkeley Barb, winning second place in their Favorite Street Musician contest. By then, she was donning her signature look: a silver, plastic helmet with white wings, originally belonging to Joel.⁠ ⁠ Though she “retired” from music in 2000 to care for her aging parents, Songs in the Key of Z, a book and compilation album by music historian Irwin Chusid, stoked renewed interest in the “outsider music” of Space Lady. Encouraged by her second husband, Eric Schneider, Susan released “The Space Lady’s Greatest Hits” in 2013 on Night School Records, including original music and a handful of her best-known covers. She became even more well-known in 2014 when her first LP ended up on The Guardian's list of The 101 Strangest Records on Spotify.⁠ ⁠ Following the success of the release, she embarked on two world tours, and in January of 2019, Portland’s own Mississippi Records re-released this magnificent collection of the wonderfully weird. We’re thrilled to have such an icon in the Maps library.

We’re excited to introduce the newest addition to the Maps team, our Marketing Manager, Sarah O’Malley (@schmomalley ).⁠ ⁠ Originally from the DMV (iykyk), she spent a decade working primarily as a graphic designer. After moving to Portland, she tried a variety of roles across a handful of industries before finally landing at Maps. Her heart beats for efficiency, organization, community, and play. You’ll find her at every coffee shop around town, in the modern and contemporary wings of the Portland Art Museum, and filling a Goodwill cart with finds fit for an early 90’s female protagonist, or a messy little boy.⁠ ⁠ Sarah pulled her four favorite records* from our retail shelves and told us why she loves them.
