Who better to curate a reading list than the man who has spent over four decades putting India's art, craft, and culture into print? Bipin Shah (@bipinshah123 ), founder of Mapin Publishing, the Ahmedabad house that helped define illustrated book publishing in India, has handpicked five titles from our library that he holds close. From 'Handmade in India' to 'Raja Ravi Varma', his choices are a love letter to India's visual heritage. Three of these titles, Jali, Incredible Treasures, and India: Art & Culture, are now out of print (Shhh... bringing them back in 2027), making this reading list all the more precious!

Celebrating Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary, the story we like to recount from his book is how in 1937, he fell gravely ill and slipped into a coma. He recovered. And the first thing he did on regaining consciousness was paint a landscape. Not rest. Not speak. Paint. Tagore came to painting late, only in the last two decades of his life. But he believed there are parts of human experience that words cannot reach, that some things must be expressed through lines, colours, sounds, and movements. Two books worth your time if you want to know Tagore beyond the biography: "Gifts of Solitude" by Ashvin Mehta, with words by Tagore himself and "The Last Harvest: Paintings of Rabindranath Tagore" edited by R. Siva Kumar (currently out of stock). Link in bio.

This Buddha Purnima, we revisit one of our most extraordinary publications — Tree & Serpent: Early Buddhist Art in India. One of India's greatest Buddhist sites lay buried and forgotten for nearly 2,000 years. Excavated between 1994 and 2002, Kanaganahalli in Karnataka emerged remarkably intact... Its limestone reliefs narrating the Buddha's life, Jātaka tales, and the story of how Buddhism took root in the Deccan. Many of these works are published here for the very first time. Available on our website and leading bookstores
