Next in our Sound Matters feature series we sat down with Tom Smith, the mastermind behind @c0smicsl0p . Part not-for-profit events series, part soundsystem, part record label, the money raised through Cosmic Slop helps to fund @mapcharity , that Tom co-founded in 2007. MAP has spent nearly two decades providing creative education to young people in the community who have difficulty accessing mainstream education.
Born in 2009, Cosmic Slop utilises the gallery space of @h0peh0use (the building that MAP’s education programme is housed within) and a now fabled soundsystem that Tom began building himself prior to Cosmic Slop coming into being. Stepping into that room, feels special - something that can’t be boiled down to the clarity, warmth, weight and absorbing feel of the soundsystem. It creates a level of respect from those that attend and those that DJ, with many of the scene’s biggest names supporting the cause. It’s a collective acknowledgment that this isn’t just a normal club night; there’s a greater meaning to it all.
We sat down with Tom at the start of the year to dig into the journey and evolution of MAP, Cosmic Slop, their respective significance and what the future holds. Full interview is up on the Mr Bongo website and is well worth a read.
A HUGE thank you to everyone involved in LRFS26 and everyone who came out to support it ❤️

🔊Some rooms do more than host parties.
Cosmic Slop in Leeds is a fundraiser, a self-built sound system, and part of the wider work of MAP Charity, whose alternative education programmes support young people who have struggled within mainstream schooling.
What makes it special is not just the party, or even the sound. It is the way everything connects: youth work, music, education, space, labour, history, and a room shaped over time with real purpose.✨
For the new Time Capsule Substack piece, we spoke with MAP co-founder Tom Smith about how Cosmic Slop grew out of the same thinking as the charity itself, why their sound system had to be built rather than bought, and what it means to create a place where music is not decoration, but part of how people find direction.
