From the southern archipelago, colors rise from ground and sea — red, yellow, blue — carried by stone and thread across space. Waves repeat, weaving holds, formations gesture — like the geological markers that shape the Yaeyama. Across distance, the islands speak in rhythm, in weight, in presence—through the patterns of weaving, the layering of stones, and the echoes of song and dance. Across space, they endure — dispersed, persistent, alive — relation without center, without surrender.
Kimiko Matsutake is a traditional textile artisan specializing in Yaeyama Jofu. Based in Shiraho on Ishigaki Island, she founded the dyeing and weaving studio “Nawata,” where she creates handwoven textiles using natural dyes.

Sometimes the smaller journeys leave the biggest impressions. Collecting red and yellow rocks along the north peninsula shoreline. Fragments, colours, and patterns will be presented along the Island Geology maps from 1958, drawn by the American military survey at @sakima_art_museum1994 .

主催・企画：Valerie Portefaix ヴァレリー・ポルテフェ 協力：佐喜眞美術館
本展は、1955年から59年にかけて山里節子が協力した米国地質調査所調査団の地質学者ヘレン‧フォスター博士による石垣島の当時の軍事地質調査の貴重な資料と地図を中心に、石垣市在住のカビラヤスヲ、ヴァレリー・ポルテフェ、松竹喜生子、本原秀雄の５人の作品で構成しています。
山里節子は、1937年に石垣島に生まれ沖縄戦で家族8人のうち4人を亡くしました。米国民政府立の琉米文化会館で学んだ英語力を生かし、フォスター博士の調査に協力しますが約30年後にそれは石垣島の軍事目的の調査だったと知り、贖罪意識を抱くようになりました。沖縄戦と調査に携わった体験から、さまざまな平和運動に参加し、2016年から二度と沖縄を戦場にしないために、石垣島への陸上自衛隊配備とミサイル基地建設に反対する「いのちと暮らしを守るオバーたちの会」を立ち上げ週一回のスタンディングを行っています。
八重山上布と白保織の第一人者である松竹喜生子の作品では、植物染料を通して、島の色彩豊かな景観を探求します。
本原秀雄は、島の自然の色彩と砂に魅せられ、戦時中に使われた石垣島のジャングルや洞窟の避難場所を調査した作品は、佐喜眞美術館の《沖縄戦の図》とも共鳴するでしょう。
アーティストであり活動家でもあるカビラ‧ヤスヲ氏は、2019年から「いのちと暮らしを守るオバーたちの会」の活動に参加し、共に平和運動を担ってきました。彼の絵画は、平和と人類保護への道を歩む巡礼の感覚を強く喚起させます。
ヴァレリー‧ポルテフェは、山里節子と緊密に協力しながら、資料収集、地図作成、ドキュメンタリー映画『 Running Against the Wind（風に抗う） 』の制作を通して現在の石垣島にのしかかる問題提起に貢献しています。島中から岩石などを収集することで、戦争、抵抗、そして不屈の精神に関する地質学的な物語を紡ぎ出し、それらを今展に参加するアーティストたちの素材感や色彩感覚と結びつけて紹介します。

Through textile and plant-based sensors, Audrey captured the subtle dialogue between Earth’s resonance and deep-space signals—revealing the electromagnetic currents that permeate the Yaeyama Archipelago. She presented her collection of vegetal devices and recordings from her spiderweb antenna tuned to the unseen.

Mermaiding with Emma. A guardian of the emerald pool—the mermaid is seen at dawn or dusk, blending into the coral and light, appearing only when the sea is calm. Some say she watches over the reef. Others say she is the reef — part of it, as constant and as fleeting as the tide.
