Between Lanzarote and La Graciosa, we chose to stop here, in an off-grid glamping powered by sun and wind. We slept in a Mongolian yurt in shades of red and blue, and took open-air showers, inside a wooden hut. The lighthouse is not just a “place” to stay; it is truly an enchanted place. You feel it from the very first moment, when you open the “gate” near the pier—actually just a chain marking the private property. In an instant, you are catapulted into a micro-universe, welcomed by chatty seagulls, the true inhabitants of the island. Strolling along the paths immersed in the rugged natural landscape, your gaze takes in the endless shades of the sea, until it finally rests on the silhouettes of the beautiful islands on the horizon. This tiny island is an invitation to enjoy your time—slowly—and to observe nature in its sudden “mood swings.” A book, a snorkel mask, and a pair of reef shoes were the best items we could have packed. Reading while lying on a huge hammock, gently rocked by the sea breeze, was as close to perfection as one can imagine. The crystal-clear sea surrounding the Formiche islands boasts seabeds teeming with life and colors just waiting to be discovered. The island hides an unexpected secret: a thermal spring with water at 38.7°C, which feeds the romantic tub in front of the lighthouse. During the day it offers a rejuvenating soak, while at night— in the silence broken only by the waves crashing against the rocks—it becomes an exhilarating experience, illuminated by a starry sky and the reassuring light of the lighthouse. Waking up in the desert is an experience that remains. Just a few hours of sleep, absolute silence, millions of stars overhead. We chose to stay with our feet in the sand and our eyes on the sky, letting ourselves get lose in infinity. At the first light of dawn, the dunes change color and time seems to stand still.
