RIP John. 🕊️
I was a kid. I walked into a record store and saw a cd. It was called “I, John.”
John Forte’s second album was released completely independently. No music videos or radio play and I had no idea what to expect. Despite being broke, I bought it. That one decision, in many ways, changed my life.
I played that cd nonstop. Everyday. For years. It was bigger than any genre, louder than any instrument and it was the most insightful piece of art I owned. It was recorded during an extremely trying window of John’s life. He was going through something few could relate to. And so was I. It was the first time that music went beyond something I enjoyed and transcended into something I needed. Something that validated my spirit and gave guidance to my scattered thoughts. I played it for anyone who would listen and eventually wrote my college thesis on it.
I wrote John a letter. It was the only way I knew to reach out back then. And, shockingly, I got a response. That began a long string of communication with someone I considered personal hero and a motivation. Communications that lasted years and through every era of my adult life. Until now.
The news of John’s passing today is devastating. My deepest prayers and condolences go out to his family and large circle of loved ones.

Attended an amazing weekend of basketball events at the Iverson Classic down in Hampton, Virginia. First time experiencing the gym where Allen Iverson made his mark to being one of the best. The talent was off the charts and everyone’s love for hoops really showed.

After watching everyone play, it’s clear that the work truly shows when you dedicate yourself. Commitment to the craft of basketball demands the utmost respect, and it was inspiring to see that on full display. The creativity expressed through players’ athleticism and IQ was incredible to witness, showcasing just how skilled the next generation of basketball players really is. Even amid the competition, there was a strong sense of love and mutual respect shared by all. Basketball reaches into areas of life that everyone can relate to, making it a powerful and unifying force.
