From fire-damaged ruins to a beautifully restored cottage full of character — this project has been an incredible journey from start to finish. 🔥➡️🏡
What started as two heavily fire-damaged coastal cottages, with collapsed roofs, extensive structural damage and years of deterioration, has now been carefully brought back to life by the team at South West Heritage & Developments Ltd.
Every stage of this restoration came with its own challenges — stabilising the existing structure, clearing fire damage, rebuilding roof sections, restoring traditional features and completely transforming the interiors while still respecting the history and character of the original buildings.
The finished result blends traditional craftsmanship with modern living: exposed oak beams, handmade-style terracotta floors, slate finishes, bright new bathrooms and open-plan spaces designed to last for generations to come.
Projects like this are exactly why we love heritage restoration — saving buildings that many would walk away from and giving them a second life within our local communities.

Roof work 🏘️
The reed and plaster ceiling of this Grade II listed cottage had been supporting almost a metre-thick layer of thatch. We have just started the delicate structural repairs needed to strengthen the structure before giving it a new roof. Exciting work ahead!

Uppark House & Garden shortlisted for the RICS Awards - South East 🏅
@upparknt was shortlisted in the Heritage category as one of six contenders to represent the South East at this year's @ricssurveyors Awards.
This is our third project to be shortlisted for the Awards, alongside @thesherborne and @theoldtownhall.trowbridge . It would be a euphemism to say that we are proud!

One problem, one solution at a ruined manor 🧱
The problem? This Grade II listed 16th century manor house was on @savetoreuse 's Buildings At Risk register, under threat of irretrievable loss. The protected status of local species' habitats and the ruin's setting in organic farmland complexified the urgent works required.
Our solution? We designed urgent repairs to stabilise the ruin before it collapsed.
The result? Our repairs got the building off the At Risk register while respecting the manor's natural environment. The project was later shortlisted for a @ricssurveyors award in the Heritage category.

Sherborne House and Trowbridge Town Hall shortlisted for the RICS Awards 2026 🏆
@thesherborne has been shortlisted in the Heritage, Community Benefit and Refurbishment/Revitalisation categories, while @theoldtownhall.trowbridge was selected in the Heritage category, both representing the South West.
We're beyond proud for our work to be recognised by the @ricssurveyors awards this year, a prize whose listed entries "represent the very best of the built and natural environment across the UK, showcasing outstanding people, projects and organisations making a real impact in their communities." The regional winners will be announced on July 23rd, before the national ceremony on October 22nd.

Reviving Kidderminster Town Hall 🧰
Despite its historical and cultural significance, the Grade II listed @kidderminstertownhall was underused for years before its recent refurbishment. Working alongside Speller Metcalfe, our team contributed to sensitive repairs to the historic fabric, the creation of a new enclosed courtyard, a new loading bay, vertical circulation improvements via new lifts, and the installation of modern mechanical and electrical services throughout.
In the Music Hall, structural interventions upgraded the historic timber trusses and purlins to support new building services and preserve the structural integrity and heritage value of the space. Alongside these conservation works, a new stage was constructed.
For the new courtyard area, we worked closely with @howells_makes to refine the canopy’s design, developing a visually lightweight structure with slender members and concealed connections. Further structural works included the design of a new sculptural stair and viewing platform, and the installation of a new lift above a brick-vaulted basement.

One problem, one solution at a 16th century barn 🛖
The problem? Increasingly frequent and severe storms damaged the roof of this barn to the point of near-collapse. Urgent works were required immediately.
Our solution? Within a short timeframe, we stabilised the structure by advising on the installation of internal scaffold to support the roof timbers. We also ensured the roof's protection with corrugated sheets prior to restoration.
The result? The barn was saved from further damage and can now be fully restored.

One problem, one solution with LCT 7074 ⚓
The problem? The needed dry dock and steel canopy for the 300-tonne craft at @theddaystory_portsmouth would be exposed to a fierce marine environment and located worryingly close to a listed masonry wall.
Our solution? After exploring a variety of materials, structural systems and sequences of construction, we developed a successful design in close cooperation with @pritchardarchitecture , Hillcrest Structural and Ascia Construction.
The result? A multi-award-winning structure that has become a beloved feature of the promenade in Portsmouth.

One problem, one solution at The Cowshed 🐮
The problem? The original trusses of the building had sunk towards the ground and were threatening to fully collapse.
Our solution? Realigning the roof structure and raising the eaves to their original height, before supporting the posts with existing padstones.
The result? A barn metamorphosed into a cosy home, winner of two @riba awards and showcased in multiple publications.
