Don’t miss out on Nicholas Christenson @_._._._._._._._life ‘s piece <372 (341) for walker> tonight 7:30 on our Graduating Composers Showcase! Here’s a bit about his work, and we’re looking forward to seeing you there! 🫵 “372 (341) for walker is a setting of an Emily Dickinson poem about grief and what comes after it. I first read it high school, some ten years ago, and originally set it during one period of mourning in 2020. This spring, during another one, I decided to revisit the idea and rewrite that earlier piece from the bottom up. Technically, it is an exploration of how to write idiomatic and specific music within an open form that allows a dynamic process of co-creation with the performers. Sound’s materiality is emphasized, a typical concern of mine which also aligns with Dickinson‘s use of physical objects and materials to portray the thematic material.” 🎫 Sunday May 3rd, 7:30pm 📍Stiefel Hall, Mannes School of Music #mannescomposition #newmusic #mannesschoolofmusic #graduation

Join us this evening 7:30pm at Stiefel Hall! Tristan Wilson @tristan.composes will share his piece “Nothing Last Forever” on the Graduating Composers Showcase. It’ll be the last concert of the year, and we look forward to sharing our original music with you once again!💐 “Nothing Lasts Forever is written for two pianos (one prepared) and fixed media. It is the final piece written and premiered during my time at Mannes; I thus felt that it should take the form of a kind of farewell. The electronics track makes liberal use of field recordings taken in my surroundings: church bells audible from the window of my apartment, and the sound of the ferry that crosses the Hudson between New York and New Jersey. These are processed into a kind of “memory-tapestry” woven together with the two pianos. Nothing Lasts Forever is dedicated to all of my friends and colleagues at Mannes” 🎫 Sunday May 3rd, 7:30pm 📍Stiefel Hall, Mannes School of Music #mannescomposition #mannescomposers #graduation

🕤Pull up tonight 7:30pm for Bruno Robles-Rendón‘s piece <Fractal Blooms> written for solo percussion and electronics, on the Graduating Composers Showcase. @brunoroblesrendon @billzhang64 Fractal Blooms is a work who’s rhythms are built on the fractal structures of the Fibonacci Sequence. These structures are the same structures that in nature guide the arrangements of the pedals of lowers, the branches of trees, and the leaves of succulents. It is composed as a bit of a game for the performer, where they are given agency in the way they navigate it’s rhythmic cycles. Fractal Blooms exists to celebrate the mathematical elegance of plants in nature and aims to capture the way a single simple rule scales into complex organic forms. 🎫 Sunday May 3rd, 7:30pm 📍Stiefel Hall, Mannes School of Music #mannescomposition #newmusic #composition

We spotted Ilia in the park and asked him about his piece, Variable Shader, which will be featured in our final Composer’s Concert of the semester, “…still and still moving…,” on 4/15. Written for MIDI piano, the work creates an interactive sonic experience through a Max instrument. In this piece, Ilia combines microtonality with chance operations and a range of melodic and harmonic algorithms. Join us on 4/15 for an evening of sonic exploration! 🎫Wednesday, April 15, 7:30 pm (Doors at 7:15) 📍Stiefel Hall, Mannes School of Music #mannescomposition #newmusic #mannesschoolofmusic

Inspired by religious artworks, Tyler will present a new song cycle for Pierrot ensemble (minus piano) at our upcoming Composer’s Concert on April 15. According to Tyler, each poem responds to the artworks, while the artworks themselves respond to original texts from the Bible. The piece thus forms a layered relationship with its sources, maintaining a delicate balance between text, image, and sound. Join us for a spectacular evening of “…still and still moving…”. In our upcoming composer’s concert, “…still and still moving…”, Bea will share a special art song—the first movement from her work My Name Is. “My Name Is” is a work that delves into Xenophobia in America and its history with immigrants. In addition to the soprano and piano setting, Bea uses audio clips around Mannes saying every way in which their names have been mispronounced to support along this powerful and heavy topic. 🎫Wednesday April 15th, 7:30 (Doors at 7:15) 📍Stiefel Hall, Mannes School of Music #mannescomposition #newmusic #mannesschoolofmusic
