What an unforgettable day at New School Brixton BJJ! 💥 the grading brought so many first stripes, a few new blue belts, and some well-deserved purple belts! The energy was through the roof, filled with hard work, dedication, and emotion. 🙌🏼 To top it all off, we had the honor of watching Coach Reiss Bailey receive his black belt in front of his original coaches — a moment we’ll never forget. Another defeat in my first fight and that brings to a close this year’s comp season and, honestly, it’s been tough, yet given me so much hope for what’s to come.
As I’ve got older my goals have changed.
The last few years of training have been difficult. Although in reality, injuries have plagued my jiu-jitsu life since the beginning. It’s never easy.
But what is jiu-jitsu without a little struggle? And what is life without learning?
I finally feel I know what it takes for my body & mind to operate at their best, how to lead a healthy life and most importantly be happy. The extra work I now have to do just to get myself fit means I can’t train as often as I’d like, nor as I once did. But I’m no longer in pain and I’m grateful for where I am and how far I’ve come. I appreciate the time on and off the mat all the more. Over the years, once all the hype around the sport calms down you come to appreciate it in a different light.
Jiu-jitsu has changed me, but I’m still the same. I like winning but I’m ok with losing. I’ve grown.
Ever since I started, my dream was to compete in the black belt division. I wanted to know if I could compete there. I feel as though I can, but I have more to give. I owe that to all the training partners I’ve shared the mat with the last 12 years.
And so: happiness, gratitude, joy; vision, determination, clarity; giving, sharing, belonging; new, old, future. Let’s go
