Exciting news 🎉 Type Design at @thecombine_ is back for its second run! If you missed our first class now’s your chance. Whether you’re sharpening your type design skills or diving in for the first time, this course is your ticket to expert guidance and hands-on learning. Check out academy.manictype.com for more info. Enrol now and join us for a summer of typographic fun! It’s the only place to learn type design in Toronto. Seriously. ———————————— Thank you to everyone who has supported me and helped me get this course off the ground. A big thanks to people @thecombine_ who have been nothing but kind and generous to me. It means a lot for me to be able to create a space to learn type design here in Toronto. Shoutout to @cassmellow @warrenschierling @baanilla @coolloee @junnguyen.graphic @eldhosekuriyan for being such great students in my inaugural run. I loved every second of teaching you guys and it was an experience watching you hone your skills week to week. If you ever wanted to dabble, or get seriously into type, I made this course for you. Type design is a bitch, so why not do it in the company of other likeminded nerds, and commiserate about your o’s and s’s while eating some pizza. It’ll be fun, I promise. Much love, Jamie

Jamie Chang is the founder of Manic Type, a type foundry specializing in bold, experimental typefaces. With a passion for letterforms and a meticulous approach to design, Jamie has created award-winning typefaces that have garnered international recognition. As both a practicing type designer and educator, Jamie has taught at OCADU and TypeElectives. Through Manic Type, Jamie continues to push the boundaries of contemporary typography while making type design education accessible to a broader audience. — Q: What do you find most fascinating about type design? I love type design because it’s such a universal and pure exploration of shape that embodies so much of the human experience. From the basic tactile forms of creating letterforms to its connection with cultures, histories and technologies. Type design is the visual representation of languages, and like language it is an ever evolving form of human expression. Spotlight | Stories from the people who bring this space to life.

I’m super excited to announce the launch of my first in-person type design course here in Toronto. The course will be hosted at @thecombine_ , and will run from Jan 10th - Feb 28th 2026 (8 weeks, 42 hours total). You’ll learn the full process of making a typeface, from calligraphy and sketching, to digitizing your design in the Glyphs app, to the ins and outs publishing your own typefaces. The course will be limited to 12 participants. No advanced type design knowledge required. The course wraps up with a celebration hosted by the wonderful people @thecombine_ ———————————— Growing up finding in-person opportunities to learn the craft of type was difficult, and I had to travel far and wide to get a real crack at type design. Of course nowadays there’s plenty of opportunities to learn remotely, but in my opinion, nothing beats getting together with a bunch of type nerds and hacking at it together. I’m really excited to now be at a point where I can launch my own course and provide a new learning opportunity outside of traditional schools for people like me in Toronto. This course has been a really long time coming and I’m grateful to able to pursue my passion for teaching type in this way. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my journey in one way or another. I hope to do you guys proud and to share my excitement for type and typography to the city I call home. ———————————— tldr: 🍎 Type Design @ The Combine 📍 The Combine, 225 Wellington St W 📅 Saturdays, Jan 10 – Feb 28, 2026 ⏰ 10 AM – 4 PM EST (42 hours total) 💰 $1800 CAD Links in bio to register.
