Out and about in Ubud. The town is built along the hills, gorges and ravines of Bali’s volcanic mountains, developing amid terraces of rice fields. This dramatic terrain adds to its charm as many places can only be reached by footpaths or pedestrian bridges. The streets, however, are not easily walkable. Buildings line the streets right up to the edge, and there are rarely sidewalks. Since the streets are clogged with traffic it’s often not safe to walk along them, so footpaths cutting through the jungle are a better option. A happy surprise is that once you get behind the buildings lining the street, you will most likely discover a peaceful haven with views over rice fields.
We arrived in Bali in time for the culmination of the ten day Galungan and Kaingan Festival which celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Our neighborhood was alive with Balinese culture and traditions.
