Join us this Thursday for Mandy El-Sayegh – ‘This is a Sign: Notes on Assembly’ - The Showroom Mural Commission 2025-26 opening preview 6.30-8.30pm. Drawing on a wide range of sources and working with participants based in The Showroom’s neighbourhood, El-Sayegh has assembled fragments of personal and collective histories, questioning whether aesthetics can be used as a bridge for communication. Key to her investigation is the question: how can aesthetic freedom exist without political freedom? And who has the right to abstraction? All welcome! 💫 For more information go to link in bio ⬆️ The Showroom Mural Commission is generously funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation @paulhamlynfoundation @mandyelsayegh #mural #sign #assembly #newcommission #freedom

A dual-sensorial environment by Malaysian artist @mandyelsayegh built entirely on-site at Brutus — The Body (2025) Spread across two levels, the space echoes elements of El-Sayegh’s studio: unfinished paintings, scraps of material, fragments of news stories, and sound and video merge into a complete sensory experience. Dissecting the machinery of mass culture, El-Sayegh explores the visual and textual circulation of painful socio-political events and abuses of power. New video works feature movement artist @yuma.sy a long-term collaborator of El-Sayegh. Collaged footage captures their ongoing movement-based research into power, subjugation, and the erotic as a site for reclaiming agency. Explore the layers of bold statements at EVERYTHING IS TRUE – NOTHING IS PERMITTED On view until 15 June Curated by @kendell_geers At Brutus in collaboration with @apoliticalorg

Don’t miss Mandy El-Sayegh’s new multimedia installation ‘Body Promise’ in the Parcours sector of @ArtBasel . 📍 Clara Shopping, 26 Griefengasse, Basel @MandyElSayegh ’s new site-specific work transforms two spaces in the partially vacant Clarastrasse shopping center, creating an immersive environment through printed matter on the walls and floors and several large-scale paintings. Curated by Stefanie Hessler, Director of New York’s Swiss Institute, the Art Basel Parcours initiative organizes public art projects outside of the fair. The performance that appears at the end of this video is ‘Strike, posed’ (2024). Performed by Mandy El-Sayegh, Score: Lily Oakes. Projection editing: Foreign Body Productions. Video: Jon Lowe. Costume: Sofia Sanchez ‘Body Promise’ is presented by #LehmannMaupin, New York, Seoul, and London, and Thaddaeus Ropac gallery, London, Paris, Salzburg, and Seoul. #MandyElSayegh #ArtBasel #Parcours

. . . . Last Autumn Freize London coincided with 7th October. These words by @broomehenry speak about the work there 5years ago on Search terms/Operations Chilling and on point. Link in bio ..... pinks and browns, deep reds like clotting blood, a mark of a crime; azure blue and turquoise, the color of the sky and sea, separated in color fields, setting off a longing for space, the freedom to travel, somehow out of reach, closed off. On the surface on the canvases, El-Sayegh layers newspaper cut-outs, torn scraps of paper, rippled latex that reminds me of blisters that have been saturated by hot bathwater, annotated proofs of a text on psychological theory, a map of sprawling roads and French villages, conjuring the terrior, which has an ungraspable meaning that supposedly can’t be described. It’s a feeling. The paintings, the printed words, the colors, run out over onto the gallery booth’s thin partition wall, disrupting the boundary between the pictorial surface and the fair’s architecture. What is for sale? Just the canvas? The painting on the wall can’t be detached, nor can it ever be really replicated, at least not exactly the same. The fair lighting is always blindingly bright. A desert of white. By the end of the week, my eyes dry up and the lids become red and swollen. I have to squint to focus on short distances. I find it hard to hold eye contact with people. I read a quote from the artist: “I always want to eradicate, or mitigate, the starkness of a white space. Bringing that warmth and activity and movement from the studio, where I make the work, into the space that people can feel that activity.” In the hypercapitalist space of the fair, there are paintings everywhere, tangible commodities, unique, one-of-a-kind objects invested with the artist’s singular touch. Easy to trade, they can be put up on the walls of collectors’ townhouses. All the paintings become indistinguishable, and yet it’s here I encounter an unmistakable pain and fury that can’t be bought or contained, that cannot be denied, that must be spoken.
