Introducing Rachel Allen, the joint director of Mandell’s Gallery, alongside her father, John Allen. This year marks a milestone as the gallery celebrates its 60th anniversary. Founded in the 1960s by Rachel’s grandfather, Geoffrey Allen, the gallery established its reputation through a specialisation in the Norwich School of painters. Today, they maintain that historic expertise while curating an eclectic, vibrant programme of contemporary exhibitions. Working on Being Woman alongside the group’s founders has been a significant experience. In our 60th year, it feels particularly important to provide a platform for such a formidable group of artists—each of whom has taken the concept of “Being Woman” and transformed it into work laced with profound meaning and inspiration. “The work in this exhibition is deeply thoughtful; it honours stories and memory, highlights hardship, and ultimately celebrates the multifaceted experience of womanhood.” It has been a genuine delight and an honour to collaborate with this fantastic group, and I am proud to host an exhibition that speaks with such strength and nuance. Being Woman runs until 18th April 2026

Being Woman artist Maz Jackson @mazjacksonart uses graphite, ink and egg tempera to make series of drawings, prints, paintings, and books. These evolve from lifetime of observation, traditions of practice and a love of life. Always drawing to capture a moment, a thought, cups on the table, a good friend or a seagull, these intermingle to depict things sacred and the spaces between. Winner of national and international awards her work has been exhibited worldwide in galleries and museums. Maz has represented the UK at Florence, Palermo, Quebec and Venice Biennale and at The Salon des Independants Paris. Former Chair of the Society of Egg Tempera Painters and member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art she also exhibits annually at the Mall Galleries, London. Photograph by @gillianallardphotos find Being Woman at @mandellsgallery until 18th April 2026.

Being Woman artist Bridget Heriz “I think of myself simply as an artist rather than a ‘woman’ artist. Yet that seems to contradict common themes in my work which feature the female body. These are a response to my research into archetypes that configure mankind’s connection to the natural world. The role of archetypes has been described as a major factor in the construction of the super ego, that is to say the overall social order to which individuals pattern their lives. We may not be conscious of such narrative as it normalises our behaviours as if preordained. It seems that the earliest peoples from whom we have evidential artefacts represented the cyclical momentum of nature as embodied in female form and often associated with bird, animal, insect or plant embellishments. Over time, however, their status was reduced and their power appropriated to the sky god alone, imagined in the likeness of a sovereign overlord to whom all is subject. As mankind advanced conceptual and technical accomplishment, this patriarchal archetype opened the door for men to view their own evolving dominion over the natural world (plus the female body, of course) as a divinely bestowed entitlement. Nature denoted as ‘female’ is of course a false concept but symptomatic of the binary ordering we have inherited and still apply. Our progress towards control over nature is much lauded, especially when it comes to defying ‘her’ greatest threat, that of death and decay. Nevertheless, disorders tend to trail in the wake and now potential calamity looms at scale. As a species we evolved in extraordinarily complex ways and theoretical clarity eludes me. But I have long engaged with those early archetypes that affirmed humanity as embedded within rather than other to nature’s realm.” Photographs by @gillianallardphotos who you will also find with Being Woman at @mandellsgallery until April 18th 2026.
