I love gouache. The flatness, the fast dry time, the permanence. It forces me to be decisive and risky simultaneously. Itās like drawing with paint.
I made the switch to gouache last year, but in earnest last fall. I developed a terrible smell aversion to oil paint when I got pregnant and pivoted. Painting with gouache large scale is possibly the hardest and most expensive thing ever, but I love the outcome. š
Iāve found I prefer to make paintings with an organic edge and white border. I crop the paper to the size of the frame and use any extra space to test colors.
My gouache works are up at @bromfieldgallery until Sunday (closing reception Sunday 3/29 2-5), then others will be up at @whalerockartstudio for the month of April (reception Friday 4/3 5-7pm).
I framed up Cosmos today for my upcoming show at @whalerockartstudio in Gloucester, MA! Iāll be showing ~25 pieces from the last 2 years. Opening reception is Friday April 3rd, 5-7pm!

As a plein air painter, I notice the thin line between being a witness to the landscape and being an intruder. My recent work grapples with that boundary by translating plein air compositions of trail boundaries - the rocks that line the trail, separating human and nature - into gestural abstractions.

I arrived at Millay Arts with no plansāonly 25 sheets of paper and a liter of white gouache. For 14 days, I painted from sun-up to sundown, guided by a simple intention: Do what feels good. And take a risk.
