On this Thanksgiving Eve, I ask ye: what exactly is THE DARK SECRET OF HARVEST HOME? Itâs certainly not corn, because youâve never seen a piece of media so openly obsessed with đ˝đ˝đ˝in all your days & that includes SHUCKED. As NovemBETTE continues on my podcast THE MONDAY AFTERNOON MOVIE, the mighty Daniel Gordh
@manboynice & I plow into the folk horror hysteria of this 1978 smash mini-series, a confusing yet riveting mash-up where The Wicker Man meets The Stepford Wives meets Midsommar meets Crowhaven Farm, et al. Our star is of course the formidable Bette Davis as The Widow Fortune, who rules a New England pagan corn crib cult in the quaint, Amish-ish town of Cornwall Coombe, Connecticut with a tart tongue & a mysterious bag of folk remedies. Not since Baby Jane has she been so exquisitely cast. If you watch this (please do) & took a shot (please donât) every time they say CORN, THE WAYS, or THE MOTHER youâd end up in the ER by Act 2 of 7. Also involved: a teen-age Rosanna Arquette, a feral, blood-stained Missy Gold, horses, âThe Corn Play,â ritual blood sacrifice, asthma, corn, 47 different festivals, weird slow-motion Harvest Lord dancing, corn, terrible ADR, corn, pickling, therapy, corn, toxic matriarchy, male blindings, dirty sex in a mud river, gigantism, tongue removals, & corn. As I say on the pod (up now on all platforms!) it basically boils down to âGet shucked or get f#cked!â đ˝đ§đťââď¸đ
