Day 1: I know the road ahead will be long, but Iām just excited to begin. I am ambitious with my first recipe, and am rewarded with a hearty, filling dinner. How hard can this be?
Day 2: Okay this is a lot of beans. Where does soup become a chili and a chili become a soup? Also, this takes a long time. Like, a LONG time.
Day 3: Now THIS is soup. We choppin vegetables. We stirrin the pot. We serving our husband this hearty delight. We are Mother. We are PROVIDING.
Day 4: Dinner approaches with a smidge of dread. Soup again. I have spent an egregious amount on onions and garlic. I go to bed and dream of soup.
Day 5: Soup is starting to consume my waking thoughts. Want to grab dinner? Canāt. Soup. Wanna catch a movie? Nope. Gotta make soup.
Day 6: Tomato soup is strangely the most difficult thus far. I toil over the pot. I am sweating. Arms are shaking. Husband is concerned. The soup? The soup is fine. Already thinking about tomorrowās soup.
Day 7: Soup is becoming second nature. I take out the big soup pot reflexively now. Itās an instinct. Every day, it is soup. It is consistent. It is hot. It is delicious. I am soup. You are soup. Soup is life.
Day 8: The seams are splitting. What does one eat for dinner if not soup? Onions are in everything. EVERYTHING. I cry every evening. Partly because of the onions, and partly because my journey to becoming a soup master is coming to a close.
Day 9: I am on auto pilot. Vegan cheese is not made for broccoli cheddar soup. I struggle. I improvise. I prevail.
Day 10: We celebrate the final day of soup with my husbandās request. I chop four onions, tears streaming down my face. It is ceremonious and slightly beautiful. I burn the bread, then try again. Iāve never had French onion, so I have zero idea what itās supposed to taste like. But in the end, it is glorious.
I am tired. I am proud. I may never eat soup again.
(This is a lie. I will eat soup tomorrow. Because a soup master never rests.)
