Since the end of last year, I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of collaborating with my friend and colleague Dr. Henrik Alexander Christ on our project „LuminousNetworks - biological, scientific and cultural diversity in the mycelium network“ at the Fraunhofer WKI (
@fraunhofer.wki )in Braunschweig.
Last month, we opened an exhibition at the Wissenschafts-Schaufenster Braunschweig, offering insight into the project and its current processes.
Alongside photographs and videos of our artistic and scientific research, we presented a life-sized negative mould of a Dionysus torso, as well as mycelium casts developed in a previous workshop addressing the themes Myzel. Macht.Körperbilder.
A central part of the opening was the panel discussion on these same topics. The transdisciplinary panel explored how working with natural materials and living organisms can reveal new perspectives on power structures, gender roles and body images, and what role transformation plays within these practices.
Many thanks to all our guests and workshop participants, and especially to our speakers Katrin Dohnt, Lucas Well, Henrike Wenzel (
@scienceandart_tubs ), Havin Al-Sindy (
@hbk.braunschweig ), as well as our moderator Dr. Steven Eschig, who enriched the evening with their perspectives. The exchange between scientists, artists and the audience showed how inspiring collectively explored questions can be.
Special thanks also to the communications team at Fraunhofer WKI: Anna Lissel, Federico Böhm and lIka Jäger.
The project „LuminousNetworks“ is funded within the framework programme of the Fraunhofer WKD.
