An All Super8 Music Film

- Bipacking: initially an experimental technique used in projection, feeding two films into the projector to create overlays. I used this technique while editing, splicing together color and b&w films.
I really wanted the band to blend in with the flowers or play with a sense of “inner multiple selves” , representing perhaps one picking the other up; or how memory randomly pops in; if not the inner struggle that resilience requires.
Similarly, I cut some pieces of super8 and taped those onto certain frames - the bee appearing in Nate’s snare drum.
- Scratched animation and painting: two of my favourite film intervention are etching directly onto the emulsion and paint over film. I sometimes use clear film to paint, yet mostly used my original footage for this film.
- Cross Processing: being a darkroom nerd, I’m deep into playing with processing to create effects and exaggerating grain + saturation. Technical constraints of Ektachrome, which I had used for some of Point Éphémère footage, gave me super washed out + grainy film, which eventually turned out great for overlays, but not suited for sharper footage.
Therefore, I used some Vision 3 500T color neg stock that I processed as a positive, using E6. It gave me super saturated but much sharper footage to play with.
For the Zenith footage, I played with an old Kodachrome processed as a negative. This beautiful stock used to have the richest colours, but the developers no longer exist and require around 15 different baths. I knew using modified C4 would render this reticular effect, kinda looking super salty or dried-earth, which I wanted to use to render the darker aspects of the lyrics, how loss dries you up.
Likewise the remjet, which is those black brush-strokes-like bits on that footage was intentionally left there.
-Solarization: that footage was mixed with another footage shot at the time at Levitation, and I wanted to include solarization in there anyway. Perfect mix of negative and positive.

Vision 3, and using cross processing, all films were developed by hand. The editing was made analogically using bi-packing technique for overlays, and frame by frame scratched animation. The final edit was digitized for distribution purposes.
