Blue Day at Moher
We lean out
over the Cliffs of Moher
like stabled animals
smelling freedom over the half-door.
But there is no stand here,
no land to gallop,
just a wrinkle of white wave below —
a roar whose echo swirls
in the fuming air—
and fear of the unknown:
realisation of the fall.
Leaning pillars rise;
bare pedestals
whose statues were wrenched
by gales and flung
against this crumbling
buttress of our county:
the wind is no lover of the land.
A photograph to capture it,
you suggest. Me, facing you.
And, of course, all the camera
sees behind is the vacant sky:
what a blue wonderful day.
"Smile," you insist.
I back a bit on gravel.
We laugh at the swing of emptiness
around me. I steady my feet
and the shutter holds me there.
