The Federation of British Artists was founded in 1961, but did you know that some of our Societies have been around for over 200 years?
The Federation was created to bring together nine independent art societies, many of which had already been active for well over a century.
Mall Galleries was established as our home in 1971, offering a central London space to exhibit, collaborate, and connect with new audiences and likeminded artists. Since opening, we have established a leading not-for-profit programme of exhibitions and events, prizes and awards, with each art society firmly remaining at the core of Mall Galleries.
Take a look at our history to explore the story behind the Federation of British Artists and our home on The Mall.

This week, we had the wonderful opportunity to speak to artists exhibiting in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition about the ideas, people, and processes behind their work!
One of these artists is Toby Wiggins RP, who painted writer, essayist and editor Ronald Blythe at home in his studio. On this work, Toby Said:
"Ronald sat for me in his study, at the top of the stairs, his back to a small mullioned window overlooking the garden and illuminating his antiquated typewriter [...] He told me that time was precious and you needed lots of it to yourself for writing as well as ‘just a few close and trusted friends.'"

Today marks the first day of International Face Equality Week!
Face Equality International's campaign #SeenAndServed highlights the experiences of people with facial differences in hospitality and service settings, where many are ignored, refused service, or made to feel unwelcome.
We are proud to share Tim Benson’s portraits of Eleanor and Phil, which are currently on display in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries!
"Facial differences, whether congenital, acquired through illness or injury, or resulting from medical interventions, are often stigmatized and underrepresented in art and public spaces. My 2 portraits of Eleanor and Phil, both of whom have port-stain birthmarks, aim to confront these stigmas head-on by celebrating the individuality and humanity of people living with visible differences. These portraits will invite visitors to look beyond appearances and connect with each subject’s personal story."
Find out more about International Face Equality Week and the #SeenAndServed campaign via Face Equality International.
📆 Visit the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries until Tuesday 19 May to see Tim’s work on display

Happy 100th Birthday to Sir David Attenborough! 🌿
Pictured here is David Cobley’s study of Sir David Attenborough for a BBC portrait commission, painted in 2019! The portrait was created to celebrate Attenborough’s extraordinary contribution to broadcasting.
Cobley described working with Attenborough as 'particularly memorable, for so many reasons,' and said that when speaking to him, 'he looks you in the eye and listens to you with great intensity.'
The portrait is filled with thoughtful details, including Darwin’s notebook alongside animals representing the air, land and sea - a reflection of Attenborough’s lifelong dedication to the natural world.
We were delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh to an exclusive private view ahead of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition opening this week!
The evening was opened by Federation of British Artists CEO Tom King, and Royal Society of Portrait Painters President Anthony Connolly, celebrating the very best in contemporary portraiture.
To coincide with the Chinese Year of the Fire Horse, the Society welcomes Shengxinyu Art, its director, Zhang Hongbin and twenty-four Chinese artists as guest exhibitors to this year's annual exhibition.
📆 The RP Annual Exhibition is open from Thursday 7 May to Tuesday 19 May
