Most people think the build starts when construction begins. By that point, you’re already months into the process. The early phase- design, budgeting, site planning- is where the real decisions are made. That’s what shapes how the home comes together. Construction is just the execution of those decisions. If you’re planning a custom home, understanding the timeline early changes how the entire process feels.

Outdoor space is often treated as an add-on. But the spaces that actually get used are planned the same way as the interior- with intention. They’re connected to the home. They serve a purpose. They’re comfortable throughout the day. And they work just as well at night as they do in the afternoon. That’s what turns an outdoor area into part of the home — not just space around it.

It’s not only about what you see out the windows- it’s what you see moving through the home. Framed sightlines. Natural light shifting throughout the day. Spaces that open into one another without interruption. Often influenced by layout, window placement, and how the home is positioned on the lot.

Ceiling height is one of the most influential architectural decisions in a home, long before finishes or furnishings are considered. It determines how light enters, how views are framed, and how a space is experienced as you move through it. When done well, you don’t notice the ceiling height. You notice how the space feels.

A carriage house isn’t an addition. It’s a decision- to keep the people you love close without giving anything up. Full privacy. Full independence. Fully custom. Every detail of this carriage house was designed with intention, from the layout to the finishes, so that two generations can live on the same property and both feel completely at home. Custom home building is about more than square footage. It’s about designing for your life, your family, and the future. And sometimes that means thinking beyond the main house. If you’ve been thinking about adding a secondary suite, guest house, or carriage house to your property, everything is possible when you build with a team that gets it.

The goal isn’t just to choose finishes. It’s to create a home that feels the way you want it to. That only happens when every decision, from the overall palette to the smallest detail, is considered together, not in isolation. Intentional design that has been thought through makes the difference, especially in a new build.

The homes that stay with you aren’t just defined by size or scale - they’re defined by feeling. Their proportion, light, material, and the way each space supports the life lived inside it shows how every level of the planning process flowed to create a space that fits and functions. At Malcolm Homes, we design with intention from the very first conversation, creating homes that feel grounded, considered, and deeply personal - no matter the footprint.

Although we love talking about building homes, content is another level completely.

When expanding out wasn’t an option, the decision was to shift the design upward. Opening the ceiling, vaulting the structure, and lifting the window line elevated this home ecponentially, without changing the footprint. Sometimes scale isn’t created by square footage.

Good design doesn’t rely on one moment. It considers how a space is experienced at 10am and 10pm —and makes sure both feel just as intentional. Because a home isn’t only meant to look good in the daylight.

It’s not always about adding more light, about placing it with purpose. A well-designed kitchen layers lighting: ambient for balance, task for function, and accent for depth. When each one is considered, the space doesn’t just look better, it works better, too.
