So I live in Cali, land in Maryland and head straight to @travispastrana ’s house AKA Pastranaland at the beginning of its legacy in the early 2000s
I’m the marketing & athlete manager for No Fear. Travis was 1 of our athletes we signed for apparel at 12 years old. Although I grew up riding/racing moto, at this point I’m way more on the business side than trying to be a racer..
As I’m going down the big hill leading to his foam pit I see him standing on top of the ramp with his thumbs up & that timeless Pastrana smile, which normally means he’s up to something
I’ve got my backpack on, haven’t stretched, ride time’s on the low & the first words out of Trav’s mouth are “I just did a double backflip into the foam pit, it’s easier than a single, when you see the blue sky, look back.. you got this”
Gullible me is optimistic and believes Trav who’s one heck of a salesman. This is all at the beginning of the backflip era and of course Pastrana was already thinking doubles
Within minutes Trav made sure I was suited up. To my recollection, I was ready to hit the ramp within 15 minutes. For whatever reason I was confident but the nerves and excitement were rumbling through my body
I listened to Travis & it was now go time. I couldn’t believe the feeling, remember seeing that blue sky Travis mentioned and was in shock as I landed at the end of the foam pit with no room to go, about 3-5 feet from pulling off a @street_bike_tommy and missing the foam pit
So here’s the kicker…
In the midst of this unbelievable feeling I look up to Travis still standing tall with this interesting look of astonishment.
His eyes bulging like Nemo and as all these emotions are racing through me, I’m confused so with the adrenaline hitting hard I ask Travis “WHAT’S UP WITH THAT LOOK?”
He’s like “DUDE you just landed a double backflip! I haven’t been able to pull it off yet and I’ve been trying for days”
My confidence landing the double exceeded my skills as I went for my first backflip on a big bike.
Travis’ response says it all 😂
Props to Trav for always showing us that we’re capable of more than we think we are…
What started as a simple surprise for my longtime friend @rickiefowler … a custom @jeremymcgrath Mendid jersey to rep his favorite rider at the WM Phoenix Open, turned into one of those moments that reminds you who people reeeally are…
