đŸȘ” DRIFTWOOD đŸȘ” Gambian and Hawaiian life is very different from each other but one timeless and universal symbol connects both lineages of water
driftwood. JACKFRUIT Although not native and not a main staple to Gambia or Hawaii the jackfruit has become very much a part of each region’s family of fruits. I heard the seeds are good too when roasted. PAPAYA Also not native to Gambia or Hawaii papayas especially the ones I like (the small ones) originated in Southern Mexico and Central America and have adapted well to Gambian and Hawaiian climates. BANANA We can give credit to Southeast Asia for bananas including Indonesia and the Philippines where my cousins have been consuming them for generations. My partner likes hers fried. PLASTIC CRATE Not very beautiful at first glance the plastic crate has beautiful cultural implications such as practical survival adaptation and informal industry because that’s how we get down. talent: @malc3000 creative direction & photography: @kaipo81 styling: @christinegarcia.collective lighting: @obscurematchi art direction: @willisthegorilla location: @alleyesgallery videography & edit: @chrischann @jono2k @gavionniere top: @lacroixofficiel bottoms: @christinegarcia.collective loafers: @brunomagliofficial #70sfashion

LET GOD SORT IT OUT What do Gambian and Native Hawaiian cultures have in common? Not much. However, in this next installation of “my story” a series of projects that highlight other artists a few universal values rise to the surface. Community, a deep connection to the land, spirituality, and resilience. Oh and there is one unavoidable element shared between our people. The ocean. Where one history is marked by departure the other is marked by arrival a dichotomy that captures our experience of entering new ideas, leaving behind old forms, and being in motion between what’s known and what’s becoming. In his own words âœđŸœ “Malcolm Amin is a Gambian-American skateboarder reigning from Dayton Ohio. He was a middle child of seven siblings. Being a leader and helping others has always been in his blood. Around the age of 20 he took a leap of faith and moved to California not sure what he was looking for besides escaping the winter. A lot of people told him California was too expensive. A neighbor told him there was no way he was going to be living in California as a skateboarder especially as a black kid.” “By the grace of God he found himself getting deals with huge brands and eventually moving to LA. He went from sleeping on floors to his receiving calls from his mother screaming she’d seen him on TV. In his eyes it was nothing short of a miracle. He currently resides in Koreatown with the goal of finishing a skateboarding video part this year.” “Growing up people told me I’d be president or a doctor but I just love skateboarding, my friends, and my family.” “I’ll let God sort out the rest.” Team Credits: talent: @malc3000 special appearance: @chrischann creative direction & photography: @kaipo81 styling: @christinegarcia.collective videography & edit: @chrischann @jono2k lighting: @obscurematchi art direction: @willisthegorilla location: @alleyesgallery developed & scanned by @arthousefilmlab đŸŽžïž Clothing Credits: skort: @zara scarf: @kenzo shirt: @adidasoriginals socks: @adidasoriginals shoes: @adidasoriginals @edisonchen leather jackett: @gianfrancoferreofficial_ #madewithkodak #kodakgold200 #portra800
