📌 ALSO, RELATED: if you care about Portland’s rich independent music scene as a fan or an artist, you gotta hear about what’s going on with plans for a Live Nation venue here and @musicportland ’s fight against it. Live Nation/Ticketmaster has made a business model out of forcing artists into deceptive, predatory contracts to grow their monopoly and then using it to dominate independent, locally owned venues. Now, while they’re being sued by the Department of Justice and 40 states (including Oregon), the City of Portland wants to help them bring their dangerous practices here.
Portland is the LAST major city in the United States where an independent music ecosystem exists without a Live Nation venue. Representatives from other major music cities, including Austin, Nashville, Chicago, and Washington, DC, have warned Portland about Live Nation’s unfair and unethical practices that have devastated their local independent music industries once they got control of their first venue. Live Nation has refused to come to the table with the Portland music community to negotiate any limits or guardrails to using their predatory playbook here.
I’m urging you to tell the Portland City Council to reject Live Nation’s proposal to build a new venue, and especially not to make it easy on them by leasing or selling them city-owned land at cut-rate prices and waiving land use rules and due process for public input. A predatory monopoly is not a public good.

Small Million was on episode 50 of my podcast, so it was very cool to catch up with Malachi on the mics almost 8 later. Much of this conversation centered around the emergency brain surgery Malachi had at the end of 2023 and her solo album release show that she played just weeks later in January of 2024. It was a special show to have gotten to attend and I’m glad we got to chat on the mics about it, as well as Malachi’s solo songwriting, Small Million, and more!

Celebrating 2 years without alcohol this month! I just assumed for years that it would be too hard/inconvenient/unfun of me to opt out, and even if I only drank a few times a week, once I’d had one drink it felt like I should probably have a few more, every time. It was filling silence that I needed, it was helping me avoid discomfort and self discovery, it was making it hard to write songs.
When I let it go, so much beauty rushed in to my life. Grateful to all my fun non-drinker friends who made me realize it could be cool to not drink. Shoutout to mocktails and NA beers for getting so much better. Always happy to talk if you’re sober curious for yourself! 💞
