Marisa kneels with Cris and Sabrina as they root for barley at My Lovely Pig Rescue.
The pigs are fed twice daily and given enrichment, often in the form of barley flakes, in between to prevent boredom and restlessness. Cris and Sabrina are part of a family and live with several other pigs in one enclosure.

My Lovely Pig Rescue is the sole animal rescue dedicated to pigs in Ireland. Nearly 150 pigs are cared for by owner and manager Cathy Davey, a group of permanent core volunteers and temporary volunteers typically spending between three weeks and three months at the rescue. Volunteers from all over the world live on-site in an amalgamation of shared campers and tiny homes, with a communal living room and kitchen dubbed the “Hobbit house”.
At the beginning of the year I was lucky enough to spend two months as one of these volunteers getting to know the animals, fellow workers and a unique kind of communal living. Thank you to everyone who agreed to be photographed; I hope I’m able to share a little bit about what makes this place so special. More to come.
