Oaggut • Fishing with a rod • Fiske med stang • Onkkiit
Prime ice fishing season in Finnmark is late April and early May — lots of snow in the highlands, yet amazing sun and temperatures ☀️
My fishing luck has been terrible this season, so here posing with @sunnivagaski char. Pictures by the always awesome @hannewilhelms
Fanasráhtu • Shipwrech • Skipsvrak • Haaksirikko
Diving on a shipwreck from the Second World War. The ship was hit by Russian air forces, and the Germans managed to steer it as close to shore as possible. No one drowned.
Jiekŋabivdu • Ice fishing • Isfiske • Jääfisku
Ice fishing with our 5 month old baby, he loves sleeping in the gietka/Sámi craddle while we fish, hike or hang it in a tree. He sleeps for about 2-3 houers.
Unni • Smal • Liten • Pieni
Lots of small fish. We keep the bigger ones and leave the small ones for the fox, crow and raven.
In overpopulated lakes, fish stay small due to lack of food. Removing small fish reduces competition and helps the remaining fish grow larger.
Lulli • South • Sør • Etelä
We often travel between north and south Sápmi because my boyfriend is from Árborte/Hattfjelldal. Here we’re visiting a south Sámi darfegoahti at the start of the hike up Atoklinten, on the Swedish side of Sápmi near Dearna/Tärnaby. Our child sleeps so well in the gietka, Sámi craddle 🙏
Dálvi gieskat – winter lately. Looking forward to more sun, skiing and diving in the coming months. We are moving into giđđadálvi – spring winter, my favourite season.
Gahpir • Hat • Lue • Myssy
In the north, we love our náhkkegahpirat (fur hats). People of all backgrounds wear them here. The puffy fox-fur hat is worn by both men and women, while the goatskin one is traditionally worn by women.
Foxskinn sown by eadni (mother), Goatskin sown by Klubbukt skinn & tekstil.

Beaska • Reindeer coat • Pesk • Peski
A beaska is a traditional Sámi coat made from reindeer fur, worn on the coldest winter days. It is incredibly warm, and to keep it soft and flexible, butter is rubbed into the smooth skin side.
This beaska is over 70 years old and has been worn by the men in our family. At 158 cm, it is far too big for me — but it carries their warmth and history.

Njuorjjonáhkki • Sealskinn • Selskinn • Hylkeennahka
Sealskin is an incredible material—windproof, waterproof, durable, and made to last. These seal mittens are over 30 years old. The shoes are 15-year-old Topaz 🔥
Sea Sámi have always hunted seals to maintain balance in the ocean. When seal populations grow too large, fish become fewer. Too many seals also harm fish quality, as seals carry parasites known as kveis, which spread to the fish.

Lihkku etniidbeivviin, Happy mothers day ❤️ We are incredibly lucky to be surrounded by so many strong and inspiring mothers here in the north.

Sámi People’s Day on the 6th of february was first celebrated in 1993, making it a relatively new tradition.
Our family don’t have fixed rituals for this day — we always celebrate in some way, but it changes depending on where we are. Last year I was in the Sahara, having a bonefire with other Indigenous 🐪 This year I’m celebrating in Unjárga, listening to local Sea Sámi joik.
However you choose to celebrate, you are making history. You are among the first in a long line who will honor this day. Thank you for contributing — celebrating shows acceptance. Ollu giitu!
Lihkku Sámi álbmotbeivviin! Congratulations on the sami people’s day!
