Thinking a lot about Afrofuturism Odditorium as we get closer to the Black and Blazed show! I'm thinking especially about the child version of me that wanted to work at NASA when they grew up, and how I was always the type of person to reach for the stars. I didn't know where I was going to land, and I didn't know what all would hold me back, but I knew that going on the journey would be worth reaching the destination. Nothing has brought me more joy in the past couple of years than getting to share my Black, queer, artistic vision with you all! Through all of the bullshit that we have to deal with, I've made it a point to never lose my joy and my whimsy. I strongly believe that expressing Black queer joy is an act of resistance, and so long as I continue to draw breath, I will continue to find moments of joy. I'm so proud of the work that I do. I'm so proud of the work that I see other Black drag artists do. I'm so happy that I get to hold space and be in community with such awesome and amazing people. And I hope that y'all feel that way too! Thank you to @abel_nwilling and @leteets for capturing this wonderful night! I can't believe it! MCA Season 1 is over now! What can I possibly say about this show? I'm beyond honored to have been casted in this competition! When I saw the application, I was so nervous to apply. I knew this competition would push me to levels I've been too scared to go to before. I had all of these ideas in my head, but always found myself struggling with landing the execution. I felt so afraid to fail that I felt afraid to try. But let me tell you that I'm so glad that I chose to do this. This competition made me put some real effort into my drag that I hadn't been pushed to make up to this point. Every rhinestone, every feather, every little bit of paint that I got on my clothes was worth seeing what came out on the other side. I'm so proud of how far I've come over the course of this past month. I could not ask for a better slate of drag artists to compete against. I want to give a special shout-out to Mx. Classless Act herself, @therapissed.drag as well as the other finalists @thegreatphagliachi and @homer.e.rodick ! Y'all did absolutely phenomenal this season! I also want to shout-out @dr.good_love for being our first Kindness Killer. Whether it was giving me space to parallel work or helping me calm down when I was panicking backstage, Mx. Congeniality could not have gone to a better person. I also want to thank @bram_stroke_her and especially @fennway333 for being the world's greatest pageant siblings. Letting me spend countless nights putting my package together, helping me in those final stretch moments, our weekly Dahlia runs, I could not have done any of this without you. And finally, thank you @the.marquis.gaylord for seeing in me what I couldn't see in myself. You have always been one of my biggest inspirations in the drag scene, even before I started doing drag myself. I appreciate that you've carved out this space where we could learn and grow in our craft. I think that I'm coming away from this a better drag artist, and I owe so much of that to you. Welp, this is it! I brought my washing machine into the week 3 boss battle and I've been thoroughly defeated. What can I possibly say about my journey through Mx. Classless Act? I honestly feel very proud of my run. If you had told me at the time that I was applying that I would win week 1 and get a top 3 placement week 2, I would have pointed at my previous track record in smaller competitions and every drag outfit ever and told you firmly that I'd get eliminated week 1, maybe week 2. To be able to make it this far feels like a win in its own right. To get eliminated alongside @dr.good_love , someone who up until this summer, I've mostly had to admire from afar, means the absolute world to me. Getting to compete with someone that has grown to be a wonderful friend and getting to be goofy with him for our send-off has been the honor of a lifetime. And God, where would I be without @fennway333 ? They single-handedly put the guts together and ensured that I'd have something to reveal that wasn't an empty black void. She and @bram_stroke_her have been the best pageant siblings a robot could ever ask for. I owe both of them my life. And so much labor. I also want to thank @the.marquis.gaylord for giving me the opportunity to showcase what I'm capable of doing. I don't think that I would have even tried without you and my fellow competitors pushing me to do more, to do better, to do bigger. Imma go do a system reboot now, but this will not be the last that you see of me! Week 2 of Mx Classless Act is over now, and we made it out with a top 3 victory! 🥉 Ængus is one of my favorite numbers to do, so when we were challenged to make ourselves into an inhuman beast, I knew that I wanted to take this number and make it better than when I debuted it almost a year ago! I love my little pig politician! Thank you to @bram_stroke_her for reprising your role as the butcherman! This number wouldn't be what it is without you! Thank you to @fennway333 for helping me with the wings! I'm incredibly proud of how they turned out (and even more glad that they stayed on my body during the number!) Hello World! I'm a winner, baby! 🥇 I'm honored to be the winner of week 1 of Mx. Classless Act! It means the world to me to feel like everyone truly got to know me for the first time. Anyone that's seen me perform before can probably tell you that while I had always been a strong performer when it came to my concepts, my mixes, and my storytelling, I always struggled with putting together looks that met the occasion. Let me tell you, that changes now. I was nervous applying to this competition because I knew that @the.marquis.gaylord was going to push me to do more, and I wasn't sure that I'd be able to meet the moment. This week required me to deeply look into myself and figure out who Maine really is. What is the impression that I want to leave on the world? What does it mean for me to be this Black, queer, autistic robot that I've spent the last the last 2 years cultivating? I wanted this look, this number, to embody what my Afrofuturist drag looks like. I wanted to explore masking, both as a survival mechanism and as something deeply exhausting, something that wears you down the more that you have to do it. How ironic was it then, that I sourced my masks from my therapist of all people. So many people in the community inspired my look for tonight. Giving the biggest shout out to @twistedtransitioner whose hand-painted tattoo suit inspired the birth of my hand-painted leather jacket. I remember being in the room while he was working on that suit, and it meant the world to me to see the love and dedication that went into making it. I also want to thank @bram_stroke_her and @fennway333 for letting me bounce ideas off of them and letting me work in their apartment when I didn't have regular access to a car. Their feedback and suggestions really helped make this number what it ended up being. I'm proud of myself for making it though, in spite of all of the trials and tribulations leading up to the start of the competition. Whether you've helped me up front or helped me behind the scenes, please know that I've seen the love and support that I've gotten on this journey, and know that I'm beyond grateful for it! 📸: @abel_nwilling & @leteets
