What are we? What do we show about ourselves? What is authentic and what is merely a projection, a definition, a staging of what we want to be, what we reveal about ourselves? What happens when the viewer joins in and brings his own perspective, his sympathies and antipathies into play? Even landscapes, interiors, or even a particular color scheme have an effect on the viewer: I like it – I don't like it. Images of people, and portraits in particular, polarize far more than other subjects in painting. The reproduction of human beings is the supreme discipline. In addition to external similarity, the character, the persona, must be captured, an autonomous living entity that can be found beyond the similarity of form. Capturing this requires the greatest possible honesty
and objective distance on the part of the painter. In order to portray the individuality of the subject, the painter's own self must become a resonance chamber.
