Ahead of tomorrow’s publication of A River Running Through You, here’s how @elin_manon_illustration and I got ourselves in tune despite living far apart. I knew as soon as I saw Elin’s work that she was the perfect illustrator, and hardly dared hope she’d be willing and available. But @magiccatpublishing approached her, the answer was yes, and I couldn’t have been happier. It’s often the case that children’s book writers and illustrators don’t actually get to meet when they collaborate but I just couldn’t imagine working on this book without connecting in real life. So last summer whiIe I was in Devon, we arranged to meet and walk on a truly legendary river, the Dart. We visited some of the places I was last at when writing The Flow; we drank G&Ts on a tor; we scrambled through sumptuous rainforest; we swam; and we talked and talked and talked… By the end of the day I understood that this book would be something special. Elin’s pictures and my words speak the same language. In fact over the ensuing weeks and months the words in my draft grew fewer and fewer, as the visual storytelling developed. The result is that now you could, if you wished, read the book without words at all! We’ll be together in London tomorrow, appropriately at @word.on.the.water to properly launch this aquatic book baby. Come along if you’d like to, from 5pm.
