this time last year i was moving out of my tufting studio in LA. since then, i have settled into a new and grounded life in Denver, CO. here, i’ve watched the seasons change: the native grasses that barely came up to my knees at the beginning of summer now tower above me, twice my size, swaying in the mid-autumn wind. i’ve watched my best friend’s baby grow over facetime and photos. she can now lift herself up off the ground with the help of her growing thighs and strengthening grip. in other years i may have witnessed these changes with a slight tension—like time was moving faster than i wanted it to. but this year, i welcome it.
one of the biggest shifts i’ve experienced on a personal level is in the way i relate to my work. i realize that some of you may think of me or this page as a business. in a way, i used to think of it that way too. i attempted to curate a very specific brand with an equal balance of professionalism and authenticity. but honestly, i have no interest in doing that anymore. Magic Carpets is, and always has been, just me.
this shift is allowing me to heal my relationship with my creativity. i have committed to being a student of astrology, which has given me the language to engage in this rich and transformative period of my life. i’m planning a beautiful wedding with my life partner, holding hands as we grow into this new chapter of our lives. i’m changing the way i relate to money by stacking side gigs to protect my creative spirit from capitalism. i don’t have expectations for my future, only commitments and devotions.
i love living in a place where i can watch the flowers in my neighborhood change from tulips to irises to bursting summer wildflowers to seed. the temperatures are dropping and the stacks of leaves are piling up. it is cool to watch just how fast plants can grow from seed to bursting with color. the frost will come soon and the color will fade for a while and it all feels timed perfectly. not too fast and not too slow.

I had so much fun making this piece. When I was tufting the border, I had quite a few “trust the process” moments. I’ve been experimenting more with depth and sculpting in a way that makes the piece feel more 3D. I definitely spent much more time sculpting than I did tufting!
This rug is for those who, like me, believe that the love of kitschy hearts and a pink/red color palette is not a Valentine’s Day exclusive thing, but rather, a lifestyle 🌹❣️☁️🏹💌

4 hours later… 🤪 After a physically challenging tufting session, I wasn’t so sure about the Valentine ribbon effect I was going for…❣️Am I insane for attempting this? lol
I love my rug clippers almost as much as I love my tufting machine 🙊❤️
I do about 70 percent of my sculpting on frame and the other 30 percent once the rug has been glued and backed. Sculpting while I tuft requires a tedious order of operations, but it give me the best results with the rug wool I use. I’m having fun creating more sculptural pieces and playing with 3D effects of sculpting. Very into how this chain is turning out ⛓️⛓️⛓️
