I wanted to share my thoughts on what’s been happening in the pin community lately. There’s been a lot of finger-pointing and tension and while I don’t agree with some of the shady stuff that’s going on I also don’t think nonstop call outs are helping things move forward. Most of us here because we genuinely love pins and the community around them. It’s deciding how to display them, organizing and then the placement on the boards. In addition to being sure to keep some space for future pins. To some of you this may sound a bit weird but for over 5 years I’ve wanted to make this pin. Of course there have been no authentic pins made of Sunflower because of the perpetuating racial stereotype of the young black centaurette in Disneys 1940s #fantasia This is a great depiction of Black Americana or “Negrobelia”, which are phrases used to describe the collecting of black memorabilia that relates to African American history. I’ve seen a few #fantasypins made of Sunflower but they didn’t do her justice. They changed her image to reflect their version of cute or pretty. Black Americana contains astounding mementos reflecting true lives of people of African descent,” including all that African Americans have suffered through visual media, “depictions that are a testimony of life in the past,” including “the ‘good, bad, and ugly.’ ” Thank you @bigfatlanyards she’s perfect!
