The Umm Saba’a Storytellers: Water Gathering
A spoken-word performance inspired by the Umm Saba’a spring and other water legacies. Presented by local community members who co-wrote stories during the Water Diviners* workshop at Maghras over the past two weeks, led by artist Jumana Emil Abboud.

خلال حفل تدشين الكتاب، تحوّلت هذه المساحة، التي اعتادت أن تكون مقرًّا لعمل فريق #مغرس، إلى مساحة عرض قدّمت مقتطفات من “مغرس: مزرعة تجريبية”، المعرض الذي شكّل جناح المملكة العربية السعودية في #ترينالي_ميلانو الرابع والعشرين بإيطاليا، بتكليف من هيئة فنون العمارة والتصميم.
Usually a working base for the #Maghras team, this room was re-situated during the book launch as a display, presenting fragments from Maghras: A Farm for Experimentation commissioned in 2024 by the Architecture and Design Commission and developed for the Saudi Pavilion at the 24th #Triennale_Milano.

يوثّق الكتاب تجربة #مغرس كمزرعة تجريبية ومساحة ثقافية بحثية مبنية على عمل مجتمعي، ويجمع بين نصوص ورسومات وحوارات تشكّلت عبر المواسم ومن خلال العمل الميداني.

Our book documents the #Maghras experience as a farm for experimentation and a site of research and community practice. It brings together texts, drawings, and conversations shaped through seasons and sustained fieldwork.

أربع جلسات شكّلت برنامج إطلاق كتاب #مغرس، تنقّلنا فيها بين الزراعة بوصفها معرفة متوارثة مرتبطة بالزمن، والرسم كطريقة تفكير وبحث إثنوغرافي، وعرض فيلم قصير يتأمل المكان عبر الذاكرة والصوت، ونقاش حول الأغنية والشعر كأرشيفات حيّة. شكرًا لجميع المتحدثين على كرمهم، واهتمامهم، ومشاركاتهم التي أثرت الأمسية.
Four sessions shaped the programme around the #Maghras book launch, moving between conversations on farming as inherited, time-based knowledge; drawing as a method of thinking and ethnographic inquiry; a short film reflecting on place through memory and sound; and a shared discussion on song and poetry as living archives. Thank you to the remarkable group of panelists for their generosity, care, and thoughtful contributions.

Last week, we gathered at the farm to celebrate the launch of the new #Maghras publication. Leen Ajlan’s (@leenajlan ), work at @triennalemilano presents a project rooted in Al Ahsa’s date farms, where she explores how design can play a role in regenerating ecological systems and reviving traditional craftsmanship. Her research investigates the effects of agrarian monoculture and phosphate fertilisers on soil and water.
The canopy and veil harvest pieces are experiments in circular strategies that aim to reconnect craft to agricultural practice. Developed in collaboration with the craft designer @mhairi.boyle and craft communities across Al Ahsa and Bahrain.
تعرض لين عجلان مشروعًا متجذّرًا في مزارع النخيل في الأحساء، يستكشف دور التصميم في دعم التجدد البيئي وإحياء الحِرَف التقليدية. تتناول أعمالها تأثير الزراعة الأحادية والأسمدة على البيئة، وتقترح استراتيجيات تجديدية طُوِّرت بالتعاون مع مصممة الحِرَف فيري بويل ومجتمعات حرفية في الأحساء والبحرين.
