I had only just put on the complete cosplay for the first time right before the shoot, and Kara made it shine in the Gaylord atrium! Qifrey is one of my favorite characters in general, this cosplay is one of a handful I’ve made where I’m just SO excited to run around and talk to absolutely anyone who recognizes the character - if you know Witch Hat, you have good taste and I’d love to chat! That is the essence of magic.”📖 I was rereading the Witch Hat Atelier manga and discovered a note by Shirahama that Qifrey’s cloak has a waterproofing spell on the lining?! Another detail I need to go back and add to this cosplay. One of the aspects I love about this series is how integral the clothing is to the world and its characters. Shirahama’s love for clothing and design shines through in her illustrations and the way her characters talk about clothing. 🪶“There is always hope. That’s just the kind of witches we are.”🌕 Today is a HUGE day!! The Witch Hat Atelier anime series is premiering today, and humans will reach their farthest point from Earth this evening on Artemis II! I’m absolutely giddy about both events, at different scales and for (only slightly!) different reasons. Witch Hat is a gorgeous manga series I’ve loved for a couple years now, I’m so glad the animation studio took its time with production so this show can be at its very best. Even if you’re usually not an anime fan, I highly recommend giving this one a shot. It’s a beautiful story that strikes a wonderful balance between a compelling story, interesting characters, a sense of whimsy, and a deep respect for the world and nature. I think that last part is what makes this timing so lovely for the Artemis lunar flyby!! I’ve been absolutely beside myself about this mission since launch, and today’s achievement is a historic win for humanity! With nothing but our human ingenuity, we’ve sent four of our very best farther into space than ever before. I’m so emotional today about the scale of this achievement and how lucky we all are to be able to witness it. I’m starting my week just marveling at the breadth of human achievement, to have the curiosity and ability to both create meaningful art and to explore the universe. People are awesome. 🪄“Do you like birds? ‘Cos I do. The full freedom of flight, not being bound by gravity. It’s what I always wanted.”🪽 This was the very first final I picked out of the proofs Lav sent me. It’s so striking with the shadows and lighting, Lav really knows his lighting design soo well. I think it’s fun to experiment with moodier shots for my costumes and see what’s possible for them in styles like this. I was talking with a friend recently about how this is a big reason why I like cosplaying from Bungo Stray Dogs, the cast of characters are all very inspiring and evocative for creating interesting images like this one. I still have two more costumes to make from this series before I’d consider myself “done” with it, but it really is a series I have a lot of fondness for and will take a lot of artistic inspiration from into the future. 🌕“Strange is the night where black stars rise / and strange moons circle through the skies, / but stranger still is / lost Carcosa.”✨ I realized I haven’t posted since before the Malevolent finale, how time flies! I haven’t started Theshold yet, but I’ll pick it up in time. The series finale was perfect and I’m so happy to have the full story of Malevolent to share with others and to relisten to for myself. I’m taking my time with starting the new one, and I think it dovetails with my lack of posting. The fact is that there is currently an immense pressure, both online and offline, to keep producing and consuming at a faster and faster pace. We’re allowed less and less time to sit with the things we enjoy to appreciate them deeply. I’ve been letting myself enjoy things at a much slower pace lately and it’s done wonders for my mental state and physical health. I thought about posting photos last month a few times, and honestly just didn’t feel like it, so I didn’t! And things were fine. I don’t want to drone on like some self-help influencer, so I won’t go on and on about it. I do still love cosplay and making cool things, and I still have lots of photos to share. They’ll all get posted, it just won’t be weekly. If anything, I think being offline more has made me appreciate my cosplay hobby all the more! That’s all to say that slowing down has been great, and the new pace isn’t abandoning the hobby nor is it a temporary reprieve before going back to the unhealthy speed I was going at before. I think I just like living slower. Malevolent has been a constant in my life for three entire years now, and it’s crazy to think about how much has happened in that time. I’ve made and reconnected with so many friends over this podcast - if you’ve met me in person you’ve probably heard my pitch for it! I was SO HYPE when the Dancers made another appearance recently! My original costume might need some updating for a new mask with the descriptions we got 😈 I’d imagined a group of bloody, faceless wraiths akin to the ones in Lord of the Rings, and I think it’s still a similar vibe, just even spookier now! Even if the story is ending I still have so many Malevolent costume ideas I want to create, there’s just something about the imagery and creatures of this world that really scratch my brain in just the right way. 🌕“It looks like the dancers have… delivered us.”👑 I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Malevolent is ending this week! After listening for three years (and relistening many times), it’s exciting but bittersweet to hear this incredible story come to its conclusion. I cannot recommend this podcast highly enough, I really believe Harlan Guthrie has created the audio drama of the decade with Malevolent. I was thinking back on it, and I realized Malevolent was what got me back into cosplay in earnest three years ago! Season 3 had just finished, and I got a last minute invite to Katsucon, so I whipped up this Dancer cosplay in two weeks to get in the spirit of the con world again. It started a huge personal journey for me of getting back in touch with my creativity and the cosplay scene over these past years. I can’t thank Harlan and his story enough for the way it has inspired and keeps inspiring me. This podcast continues to be such a source of strength for me, and I can’t wait to see how this beautiful story concludes. 💫“The ticket to the future is always open.”✌️ I love that the overall message of Trigun is hope, even when things look bleak. Anime protagonists are well known for bombastic fights and flashy moves, and Trigun has plenty of that, but I think the series really shines in the quieter moments when we get to see who each of the characters are outside of the big fights. I love that Vash goes out of his way to help people with small errands and that Meryl still shows her fear even when choosing to do something courageous. It’s all very inspiring, especially with the state of things. The best thing we can do for the world is help out where we can, and choose to do good. Love and peace, as Vash famously says. I’ve been keeping up with the episodes as they come out, and it’s such a great feeling to see one of my favorite shows back after three whole years! Trigun is an incredible series I strongly recommend to any anime fan, or even if you just like scifi (or just Dune!), it really is one of the greats. This final season is already starting off strong, I love Meryl’s new outfit! I was so happy to get to do this cosplay group at San Japan this summer.
