Itโs hard to put into words when a story gets a little emotional.
This is a family story, a story about generational trauma, inheritance, culture, and grief. Itโs a story that mixes history with a familyโs immigrant experience, and you know I love history, so I found those parts fascinating.
A beautifully layered story about resilience, about how our familyโs history shapes who we are, and how we are all connected to our ancestorsโ experiences. What it means to find your identity and being caught between cultures.
A powerful book with a powerful title.
Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours for this tour invite.

On my way home from an intimate Staring into the Sun event at @castiglione.london that was as layered as this photo. It was for @brownu and @phillipsexeter alumni and guests. My bookโs doula @_kate_hammer shared a heart-warming intro and then I spoke about โThe Three I Kept and the Three I Cutโ about my research and writing process, interspersed with readings. Then some Q&A, sales, and signings!
Was so lovely to see old friends and meet new people.
Huge thanks to Katherine Kwok for organising it and to Roberto for hosting. Check out Castiglione for your next event!
More photos on the way.

Living in the UK means celebrating two Motherโs Days: British โMothering Sundayโ in March and the Motherโs Day in May observed by countries like the U.S., Germany, and Italy.
Today I woke up to an ecard from my brother @anthonypostman_mercurycalling wishing me a happy Motherโs Day. Thank you!
I will send my good wishes to our stepmother, who in the 1970s took on the difficult role of mothering two young children who werenโt her own.
It wasnโt until I saw a post by @this.is.bipolar that I thought of my mother Bonnie. Which is ironic considering that Iโm in the middle of a book tour for my debut, Staring into the Sun.
Grappling with her death by suicide when I was four years old propelled me through 9.5 years of research and writing.
It was likely that she suffered from bipolar syndrome or paranoid schizophrenia. Times were very different in the 1970s. There was a lot less support and a lot more stigma.
This coming week is Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK. My asks: please talk about mental health more openly. Listen to others. Another good idea: train to be a Mental Health First Aider.
