METER is a night of verbal, sonic, and kinetic experimentation. Local poets reading live. Musicians and dancers improvising performances in response. Crafted verse collides with spontaneous composition.
Featuring Madeline Shuron
Madeline Shuron (they/she) is a post-modern artist that works at the intersection of performance and scholarship, attempting to break down the audience-performer relationship through movement, text, puppetry, clowning, and film. Her work has been shown throughout Philadelphia, and she has given lecture-demonstrations at Temple University, MIT, UNC Asheville, and the American College Dance Association’s 50th Anniversary Conference. Their relationship with improvisation began at Bryn Mawr College and was given rigorous and generous attention at Headlong Performance Institute; they hold an MFA in Dance from Temple University, where they teach.
Meet MADELINE SHURON - an artist and educator who believes in the radical power of play. Living in South Philly with her partner and cat, her work bridges pedagogy, theory, scholarship, puppetry, monologue, music, and more. She recently started learning accordion. This Thursday she's bringing a crankie set to a poem by Irina Klepfisz about romantic and domestic love.

Oh! Thrilled to have had a small part in this glorious run of S. An-sky’s THE DYBBUK: OR, BETWEEN TWO WORLDS here in Philly. I worked as the lead puppeteer and designer and got the chance to create backdrops and puppets for this show. Grateful as all ever to @opentheaterworkshop for the opportunity and excited for spring’s play - i urge you to join us! This is something special!

So @shtetlphilly put on a haunted house and yiddish cabaret last night and I heard it was a hit??? You’re missing out if you’re not in on the growing yiddishkayt scene here in Philly! Pictured are some stills from the haunted house and a bit of a crankie I performed to Yehoash’s yiddish poem “פערגענגליכ-ײט” (translated to “Mortality” by Marvin Zuckerman) lovingly taken by @oliviajennadance ❣️🙂↕️ my partner @sophiekoooe (who runs the @philly_yid Instagram account!) and I also choreographed a doyne to a recording from the Chicago Klezmer Ensemble which was such fun!
In a week I’m headed to present at a conference on my research on German/lesbian affect and syntax of the body (thanks @sinister_wisdom for hosting!) but right now I’m thinking about how it’s been about a month since I DONT HAVE THE RIGHT WORDS FOR IT YET closed! Beautifully captured by @shoshshoshshoshh with the dreamiest lighting by @sophiekoooe this froggy piece is hibernating for now, but might hop back up in the future 🐸

We had so much fun at the @cannonballfest puppetry workshop over at @asianartsphilly today! Participants learned about mechs and levers, including simple machines and the parts of an overhead projector, then played around with paper and gels to create small moving scenes 🔦 yay puppets❣️
