MADE IN Platform

Future Legacies brings together the outcomes of a vibrant two-year exchange of knowledge across Europe. It is the result of a collaborative process between designers, artists, curators, editors, translators, partners, and, above all, craftspeople who shared their expertise and opened their studios. Structured in three chapters, the book traces the project’s development: • Knowledge Atlas – mapping crafts, materials, and expertise at the intersection of nature, science, and making. • Collaborations – residencies, workshops, and summer schools across the consortium, resulting in four thematic clusters: Craft Heritage Reinterpreted, Hybrid Environmental Practices, Innovating with Heritage and Natural Resources, and Learning and Knowledge Transfer. • Perspectives – essays and reflections on the evolving role of craft in the 21st century. By weaving together essays, interviews, statements, and project documentation, Future Legacies presents craftsmanship as a living, evolving practice — central to ecological thinking, cultural renewal, and the pressing challenges of our time. Future Legacies is a truly collective work. In 2014, the Croatian Art and Design Collective @oaza_kolektiv initiated the Made in Ilica / Old School Ilica project in response to the disappearing crafts and workshops in the heart of Zagreb. Old School Ilica proposed a model for the self-sustainable development of the local community through social design, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing and co-creation among craftspeople, designers and citizens.  What started as a local initiative during the 24th Biennial of Design (BIO 50) @bio_ljubljana , continued with the mapping of local crafts, knowledge transfers in form of different workshops, seminars, exhibitions and a book that documented and facilitated the dynamic relationship between design and crafts - MADE IN: Crafts and Design Narratives, connecting 6 partners from 4 countires. In 2023, MADE IN: Crafts and Design Narratives received the prestigious European Heritage Awards / @europanostraeu Award in the category Education, Training & Skills.  In 2023 the MADE IN Platform was launched with 10 partners from 6 different countires and Future Legacies exhibition brings together the results of three years of collaboration between designers, craftspeople, scientists and other experts as part of MADE IN. Future Legacies will showcase new possibilities for craft processes based on transdisciplinary knowledge and skills exchange, and their potential to effectively address the social and environmental issues facing us today. In 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱 (Ore Mountains), young creatives explored sustainable woodcraft through traditional techniques, experimental design, and circular practices—reviving heritage while rethinking wood as a resource. @angewandtekunstschneeberg Jacob Strobel, Thekla Maria Nowak 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 workshop in Serbia looked at knitting as more than just a making technique, but as a process connecting handiwork with industrial production methods while building a community. @novaiskra In Portugal, hands-on, collaborative 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 created informal learning environments where emerging designers and craftspeople co-created market-ready, sustainable, peices honouring traditional basketry. @passaaofuturo w/ Astrid Suzano @henriqueralheta @joao__xara 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘀 invited participants to explore the urban landscape of Ljubljana through craft—responding to its textures with metalworking and conceptual design. ⚫[𝗠𝗔𝗗𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻: Future Legacies] 📆Opening: 15 May 2025, Ljubljana, Slovenia 🕚18.00 @center_rog ⏰️20.00 @mao_slovenia #exhibition #preview The Future Legacies exhibition brings together the results of three years of collaboration between designers, craftspeople, scientists and other experts is divided into four thematic clusters that shed new light on craftsmanship as a living, developing practice capable of effectively addressing the many social and environmental issues of our time.  Cluster 𝗛𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 Projects explore, how traditional craftsmanship, when combined with digital tools and interdisciplinary collaboration, can address complex environmental and historical issues, and shape new, hybrid craft practices. — 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 positions craft as a reparatory land practice to boost urban biodiversity. 🔴[𝗠𝗔𝗗𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻] Future Legacies MADE IN Platform for Contemporary Crafts & Design #exhibition 📆Opening: 15 May 2025, Ljubljana, Slovenia 🕚18.00 @center_rog ⏰️20.00 @mao_slovenia The Future Legacies exhibition brings together the results of three years of collaboration between designers, craftspeople, scientists and other experts, facilitated by ten organisations across six European countries as part of the MADE IN Platform for Contemporary Crafts & Design. The exhibition will also present the MADE IN Knowledge Atlas, a comprehensive repository of transdisciplinary expertise and natural resources. With over 100 entries covering traditional techniques, materials, processes, and modern innovations, it is a valuable resource for exploring craftsmanship, making, and designing. The Crafts section, among many other entries, features traditional basket weaving in Portugal and urban mycelium mushroom farming in Slovenia. Nature phenomena entries encompass sea salt harvesting and Adriatic white stone in Croatia, fine-grained clay from Lješeva, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and bacterial nanocellulose from Serbia. Scientific knowledge mapping includes domestic silkworm cultivation in Germany, and eco-biotechnology in Serbia.
